| My brother. He boats over 50 fish per year on average with usually a dozen or more 50 inchers. I think two years ago he had 19 fish over 49 inches. He always finds the fish. I think we're going Sturgeon fishing next week to give our equipment an early season work-over. |

| Although I have fished twice with him before I would have to say Dick Pearson. His knowledge and thought patterns on the water are very interesting. Besides, I like his bit of quirkiness. Right there with him is Frank Walsh. All I can say about Frank is he is a class act and just down right fun to fish with.

The man is a machine! His numbers speak for themselves! You could take the so called top ten best muskie fisherman around for 50" fish and numbers and LAZARUS will DESTROY all ten of those guys with 50"ers and numbers! With no disrespect to whoever those top 10 guys are!

| I've been fortunate enough to fish with some of the "best" anglers in the business. The amount of insight and knowledge I've gotten from fishing with them far surpasses anything I could have gotten from a book, a magazine, a website, etc. There are several more who I hope to have the opportunity to share the boat with some day. Guys like Tom Gelb, Dick Pearson, Doug Johnson... Not to discredit the young guides or anything, but there is no substitute for decades on the water.
If you really want to learn about muskie fishing there are two things you need to do:
1. Spend a day in the boat with someone who has 30 years or more under their belt.
2. When they talk, shut up and listen.

| You don't have to have a TV show to qualify as one of the best Musky fisherman around. There are a lot of excellent Musky hunters that don't.
I'd pick Larry Ramsell---guide out of the Hayward, Wisconsin area. He's got a ton of knowledge and experience, and is a both professional and enjoyable to be in ther boat with for a day.

There are MANY excellent Muskie anglers out there, some defined in part by where they fish...they are the 'best' on that water or waters that are similar. Some are defined by versatility, and ability to do well on any water at any given time. Some are well known through media, some not so much. On any given day any might outfish the others.
That said, I can't decide who's the 'best'. Mebbe FSF. |

Location: Lake Tomahawk, WI | Tough if not impossible question. Any given day, any body of water, any one of 50 could outfish the field. Tough to compare fishermen between geographical locations. Is the guy who shoots more trophy whitetails on QDM in Buffalo County a better deer hunter than the guy who shoots basket 8's on public land?
As far as the best I've seen at being adaptable to different locations, pressure, and presentations would have to be Dan Wojtusik (sp?), Phil Schwiek, Steve Herbeck, and Mark Lijewski.

Location: Minnetonka | Hmm... I guess there have to be some variables established in order to call someone "the best". Taking overall knowledge of lakes (topographical and biological) and fish behaviors (relating to season, solunar, etc.) into account... then coupling that with flawless mechanics & execution, number of days on the water AND genuine humility...
Not sure if I can think of someone with all that... but that's what it would take... IMHO.
Nice topic... makes a guy think...

| As mentioned, "the best" is not really defineable. But I think most people would agree that when it comes to making a choice of who'd they'd like to spend some time with in a boat Musky fishing it's going to be based on what we prefer in personality types, and of course a respect for thier fishing knowledge.
James Lindner would be a top choice for me. He combines a lot of intelligent thinking to make good choices, and does a great job using his electronices to locate good structure. Just an overall good fisherman for knowledge and a good sense of humor. |

| best is kind of a funny term...as others have said a guy like Lazarus might be the best on the body of water he fished doing the tactics he uses to put lots of 50's in the net, but take a fish out of water so to speak and how good will he do? adaptability on many types of waters from shield lakes, to lakes in MN/WI and throw in bodies of water like reservoirs and rivers . and see who can still boat fish...many guys are good at doing what they do over and over and over on the same body of water...get them on a new lake and how do they fare? "best" might to have "best on a specific body of water" added in...
I think guys like the Lindners are some of the most adaptable at finding and catching big fish... |

BOTH ARE THE BEST STICKS I HAVE EVER FISHED WITH AND I HAVE FISHED WITH MANY OF THE BIG NAMES LISTED BY OTHERS IN THIS THREAD IN MY DAY.
God knows you dont have to be a big name to be an awesome stick. Time on the water and knowing how to break down water when ever you get a chance to get on it...devines best to me. Showing up on a Saturday morning because thats the only day your wife lets you fish and going out and catching three muskies in a morning takes talent. Figuring out the conditions and getting quickly dialed in is half the battle.
Getting a call that a hot bite is on and jumping in a boat with someone dialed in on the water and shooting a video does not take much talent. Kinda like your buddy telling you to sit in his deer stand, because he had been seeing a monster buck there on a regualar basis at 7pm....its just easier to close the deal that way!
I know many awsome sticks that only get 5 days on the water a year! |

You can't spend time in the boat with those two guys and not learn a lot regardless of what you are fishing for. I spent years on the seminar trail with Dan back in the 70's and 80's, and I sat in the crowd and gave him my utmost attention every time that he spoke.
I'd also like to spend time in the boat with Rick Clunn. A bass guru, with an almost philosophical way about disecting a lake and chasing fish.
Most recent on the list is Mark Zona. |

Bob Meshikomer has 96 50" muskies to his credit and LAZARUS has well over 1500 50"ers to his credit... He keeps to his guys and that's it! You can put that man on any given body of water and he will outfish anyone on this earth! Hats off to the LEGEND! A.K.A. The Silent Killer...... Peace. |

Location: Indianapolis, IN | There are, in my opinion, many unknown great muskie anglers who don't seek money or fame. Their catches go undocumented as to limit the amount of info getting "out"! Having said that, I would love to spend a whole day with Al Linder! If it swims, the man can catch it!
There are many great guides, of which I have fished with a few. Gregg Thomas is an amazing fisherman, with a single focus, at such a young age, as I have ever witnessed!
Wil Schultz puts incredible numbers of fish in his boat! He's at the very top of MI's catch and release stats every year!
A more fitting category would be to perhaps list your top 50 anglers?
Todd |

|
| if you are measuring "the best musky fisherman" by performance, like # of fish and # of big fish, no wonder the guys who fish the best bodies of water in the world are at the top of the list. daaa.
if mike lazarus or anyone else for that matter, home waters were in ohio, neither of them would catch the number of big fish they do. If you know how to troll REALLY well, and you spend countless days on the best big fish waters in the world, you WILL catch a bunch of big fish. if you are good at trolling and troll the best the waters EVER, you will put up spectular numbers. if you have no idea how to troll and you fish troll the best water in the world, you'll only "luck" into a few nice ones.
So...i bet there are a lot of people on this board that believe catching fish over 50" casting is harder than catching 50" trolling. I do believe this is a popular opinion. If this is a popular opinion, lets remember the Mille Lacs and MN guides 4 years ago who were catch over 20 muskies over 51" each season, ALL CAUGHT CASTING. does that make them a better angler than a troller who gets a few more 50's than the casting guys? maybe...maybe not. but those guys were fishing the BEST casting bite in the world at that time.
Spend every day of the season, on the best water in the world, and you'd be amazed what kind of number you could put out too.
So, who is the best musky angler in the world? hard to say. I really think you can only say who is the best musky angler on a particular body of water. There are plenty of guys who could fish circles around Lazurus if he was forced to cast in northern Wisconsin. Mike L is also in a league of his own when it comes to trolling in eastern ontario/western quebec. So..who's the best? i honestly think you can only say "who's the best in 1000's Islands?". "who's the best fisherman on Vermillion" etc... |

Wow, I would strongly disagree with that statement. All (3) forms of fishing require precision boat control. I am a caster who uses suckers in the fall. If that sucker is not right on the break, tickling the weeds, etc. the chances of getting bit is minimal. I am sure some trollers here would have the same opinion. Please show me the link where this has been proven.

| it's not too often you get to shake hands with 2 guys at once who have _released_ likely state record muskies. i've had the good luck to do so with Kent Sorenson and Jody Dahms as they were both at the MuskieFirst outing on Vermilion last year. it's a true honor to call them both friends.
they're not on anybody's "top 10 greatest" lists, but their decision to release fish like these makes them hands-down the "best" among us - these are the guys we should be honoring and emulating. Dale McNair obviously joins them in that elite category.

| This thread is hilarious!!! Grown men or women making claim on who the best fisherman is ??? It's a little silly to even care if there is a "best" Maybe "favorite" or "dream fishing date" should have been used instead. I can't help to think the original poster had an agenda (especially after reading a few follow up responses) to anoint Mike Lazarus "King"
I like the comment "Great waters make great fisherman" It could probably be argued that every name listed so far can probably do something muskie fishing related a little better than everyone else. Let's Party!!! |

| it is a valid question, just like who is the best golfer, who is the best baseball player, who is the best poker player.
all the answers are just opinions, as there really is no way to say who is the best.

Location: Southern W.Va. | It all depends on where your fishing. Take any of the "big names" out of their home waters and I'm sure a local "pro" will probably have better success. If I was to fish say LOTW then my vote would probably be Bill Sandy or Doug Johnson, they know these waters like none that I can think of and their records speak for themself. Out east, probably Lazarus, same reasons. Wisc., probably Jim Saric or Tom Gelb. Minn. then my vote would go to Greg Thomas. Kentucky, probably Tony Grant. It all comes down to this, "Who is the best allround stick?" My vote would be Steve Jonesi, he's the best that I've ever had the pleasure to fish with and a blast to fish with. No offense meant to anyone because I fished with some pretty good fishermen over the past 6 or 7 years, but Steve has shown me more big fish then anybody, so he would have to get my vote.

| If it's all about numbers of fish, or sizes of fish, than there has to be a formula you could use...
Fish per hour of angling, with a handicap that factors in the number of fish per acre; combined with average size as compared to the size distribution of that particular lake ecosystem.

He is one of the only guys out there that never pubs himself and very rarely do you ever hear things about him from his guys. Why? Because when his guys talk about his numbers and the areas he fishes people look at them like they are bold faced lying to them. He really is that good everywhere. There are also a ton of awesome musky fisherman out there, so don't rank them, it's an insult to all of them. |

Only the ones who care what some faceless internet poster thinks about their ability to catch fish... |

Double Amen to that.
The best musky fishermen are the ones who have gotten a kid hooked on our sport. And the best are the ones who have hooked two or more. |

Will Schultz - 4/8/2009 3:21 PM The best? The guy that takes his kid(s) or other kids fishing and doesn't measure himself with other anglers by anything other than height... The BEST answer I've seen so far.
I'll second this answer.
Just go fish. Have fun. Who cares who catches the most or the biggest? |

I have fished with a couple of guys in this chat... But there's a big dude up in the Big Dtroit area named Jerry Sondag. He catches boat fulls of big fish all over the world not just muskies. He knows more about fishing than anyone I've ever met. Including some of the "famous" guys out there. He's probably going to be mad at me for saying all of that, but I fished with him 3 times on 2 lakes in the last 2 years. We caught 7 fish... All over 46 with the biggest being 54.5. I was talking to some guys from one of the Musky inc. chapters in the cities and they were telling me he has more documented 50 inch plus in the last few years than most have caught in there entire life. This is going to embarrass him pretty good but He deserves it. Hopefully he won't beat me up |

Location: Muskegon Michigan | Larry Ramsell told me last year in Chicago that Lazarus has forgotten about more big fish then the rest have caught. He would be my first choice. Then Rich Clarke,Doug Johnson, Al Linder, there are so many but really only a few who are special. Tom Gelb in a row trolling boat with frozen fingers. Thats hard core man. Kingfisher |

Location: Plover, WI | I don't know who I'd choose for Muskie fishing, but if you want a chance at a trophy BEAVER... I know a guy named Norm that is the best in that field! I think he guides for them critters too.

| Bob is up there. He fishes native fish which is much different then the stocked lakes many guys are working now. Much more difficult. |

Location: Pelican Rapids, MN | So many greats out there Past present and future. Number 3. Dan Craven - probably the best fresh water fisherman i've ever met. Number 2. Ray Kennedy - Guided my dad and godfather back in the day to many great stories. Number 1. My dad, Clayton Sondag, may he rest in peace 09/13/23- 07/16/94 - Fished all over the world for as many species as he could. I never knew him as an adult, but I believe he looks down on me every day I'm on the water. Greatest man I ever knew. |

Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | I'd say in order to be called 'the best', one perhaps should exhibit due respect to one's peers, to those who have dedicated their entire educational and professional life to studying and managing the resource, and to those who have done much to forward the sport, while participating in/working towards conservation efforts in concert with those same folks...as well as extraordinary ability to catch Muskies. But that's just me.
One of the folks I'd say has done all of that and alot more and is a top shelf muskie angler is Paul Hartman.
