| Hi I'm having a tough time picking out a new rod. What I am looking for is an 8ft rod that can throw DBL 10's and Mag Super D's and is in the price range of up to $130. I have looked at okuma rods and have seen that the 8'6" throws up to 8oz but I really dont want to bump up to a 8'6" rod since I am only 5'8". Also I don't know about there 8' heavys since it is rated only up to 6oz and I don't know if this would throw a Mag Super D well or not. Any info on a rod with these specs is greatly appreciated.

Location: Ontario, California | Get the EVX-C-861XH-T... I have received MANY calls from guys in your size range that were skeptical too. I strongly urged them that the 8'6" is the way to go for the same baits you mentioned. From the ones I heard back from, they all said that they are replacing other shorter rods with rods of 8 - 9 feet. You will enjoy the benefits of using a longer rod. |

Location: Ontario, California | 8'6" extended and around 7 feet when collapsed. The factory did produce some that were about 7'4" when collapsed but that was a while ago. The ones that are on the water right now are at or below 7'. |

Location: Hayward, WI | I wouldn't let the 8'6" scare you too much either. I am also about 5'8" and I was a little worried about the extra 6 inches over the 8 footer I had been using. Didn't need to worry at all. I can use walk the dog baits with it just fine, rip plastics, etc., and the casting and figure 8ing is great. You'll have to use a "down and to the side" motion for jerkbaits and such, but you'll basically have to do that using anything over a 6'9" rod. It doesn't feel unweildy to me.
The Okuma 8'6" XH is a good rod - that's the 8'6" I have. Soft tip and fairly slow action. Casts just about any weight bait really well. The slow action can make it a little bit more work if you are REALLY ripping big baits, but the ease of casting it gives you is a nice trade off. Right around $120.
You might want to look into Gander Mountain's rods. I think they have 8 and 8'6" rods that would handle the baits you are looking at. I used an 8' H (2-6 oz) Gander Tournament Extreme last year for 8 oz. Super D's for a weekend. It cast them, but it was a workout. I think the tip is a little stiff, and it didn't feel like the rod did as much of the work for the heavy baits. For lighter stuff it works pretty well. Their Pro Select rods are a little softer, and might actually do a better job of easily casting a wide variety of lure weights. The Tournaments are about $100 and the Pro Selects are $80 I believe.
The 8' Shimano Compre is rated 2-6, but I think a lot of guys were using them for Mag Dawgs, so I would think it would handle the Super Ds, and I would think it might be a good Cowgirl rod also.
Sounds like Mike Hulbert is coming out with a do it all rod like you are looking for - they will have thick cork too which is really nice. I think he said they should be around $130? Might want to wait a little while to see if they come out. I would be willing to bet they're going to be pretty nice.

Location: Lebanon,Mo | Tica makes a good rod as I used three of them,but went to all Okuma's for the great service and great rod for the price.I had 8fters and 8'6" models and will never go shorter again.You can cast baits and figure 8 alot easier with these rods. |
