Hi All,

I am not new to fishing, but relatively new (couple years) to musky hunting. Just picked up a St. Croix 6'9", 1-5oz lure weight rod and was wondering what reel you guys would suggest. I have looked at the Calcutta (little pricey) and the Abus, but not sure about what size reel to get.

Any assistance would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Matt

You'll probably want a 400 for shimano or okuma. Or a 6500 for abu's.

Matt - - I just picked up my 2nd. Record Series RCN Abu Garcia, last week and used it for 11 hrs. of hard casting Saturday. The RCN50 A NEW VERSION OF THE 5600C4 and The RNC60, a 6500C4 version are in my very best list for casting muskie baits. I got the 60, 2 years ago and just had to get the 50 this year. The 50 makes a great bucktail real and the 60 can handel all the big baits. the 50 comes with a gear ratio of 6.3:1 and the 60 with a 5.3:1 with 6 bearings they are a good buy for $155.00 Check EM out. I have about 25 casting reel's and I am in the prosses of selling them and upgradeing to the RECORDS Marv.

Thanks for your suggestions guys, they are appreciated. 25 casting reels.....I thought I had a lot of equipment !! I have heard a lot of good things about the Abus and in fact own a C4 myself on another one of my rods. Being up in Canada, we tend to have to pay more for all these things which kind of takes the Calcutta out of the equation. I have found a brand new Okuma 250 for $89 including shipping. Not too familiar with this reel, but is it worth the $60-$70 more to go to the Abu Record?

Thanks again

I'm an abu fanatic and I recommend you stay away from the record. check out ffo (fisherman's factory outlet) and buy a red 6000. Same reel as a 6500 C3 but uses bushings instead of bearings. Garcia claims bushing reels last longer than bearing reels since the bushings are sort of porous and hold oil.

Technically a bushing reel will last longer than a bearing reel and might be something to consider if you are using it in salt water but in fresh water with the absolute minimum of oil and care the ball bearings used in the spool or other parts of the reel will probably last longer then we will live!

i myself do not like abu's. i had one and strip out the gears. i bought a shimano torium 14 for casting bucktails. absolutely love it. it is about $170. cheaper than the calcutta and it is a high speed reel. very easy to burn big lures. there is no level wind on it so it is only good for bucktails. Shimano also make another for $170 called the tekota. i am buying one this year. it looks just like the torium but has a level wind. i never tried an okuma but got one for my grandma a couple years ago for sucker fishing with bobbers and she likes it.

I would look at the Okuma Induron 400's great reel for about $120
