hello

a couple of my abu garcias (record 60, 6500 c3) arent working right. Once i push in thumb buttom and engage reel and cast, i cant get the reel to engage and start reling in line for sometimes a dozen turns in the handle. i know its some sort of piece that wore down in the reel but im looking for a link i saw on here a year or so ago on how to take the reel apart and replace the piece.

also any one know where i can get the replacement part for whats wrong with my reels?

Sounds like the clutch plate is bad. Real easy to fix. Look at the diagram that came with the reel if you still have it.

Or send them to Abu. Reelman will know this for sure but I think the old clutch arms were some kind of softer metal that had a tendency to bend. The new ones are stainless steel and very strong. Problem solved.

You may just try tearing the reel down, cleaning the clutch arm assembly, oiling (lightly), and re-assemble.

When mine start to stick like that it's usually just because they need to be cleaned. They do wear out, I have a few that are starting to go. But they're cheap and super easy to replace.

About 18 months ago Abu started using a stainless steel clutch arm which really reduces the amount of wear on them. The old ones were chrome plated brass which worked good but the stainless work even better. This most often occurs from engaging the reel while the spool is still turning (a bad thing to do with any reel)

Sometimes all that is needed is a good cleaning. The nice thing about Abus is that there are no springs that are going to go flying when you take the sideplate off.

I have had to replace several clutch arms due to the same problem. They are easy to work on and parts are easy to get.

Where do you guys order your parts from? I usually go through Mike's Reel Repair but they are charging $25 for s/h for the order I was about to place. Instead, I'm going through southwesternparts.com but their website is brutal to navigate. Anybody willing to tell their favorite website?

I just order straight from Abu Garcia in Spirit Lake, IA. A clutch arm is around six bucks if I remember right.

I would try ordering directly from Abu. Your reel schematic should have part #'s. If I was more organized, I'd have a spare clutch arm just in case. Probably not a bad idea to keep a spare worm gear and pawl either now that I think about it.

Are all ABU clutch arms now made of stainless?
