Subject: St Croix Avid Salmon and Steelhead rod question

Has anyone used the St Croix Avid Series Salmon and Steelhead casting rods for musky fishing? I am looking at the AVC80MXF but I am not sure if it will be a good choice for small bucktails and crankbaits. It seems pretty stiff except for the tip , so I am not sure if I will get a good hook set. Power is medium, x-fast action, line Wt 10-20, lure Wt 3/8- 3. Any info or experience that some of you have had with these rods would be great. Thanks in advance.

They're great for drifting plugs for steelhead and browns, I wouldn't use one for muskies, the lure rating goes up to 3 oz but thats more of a drifting/trolling lure weight. I wouldn't cast more than 1 oz with it. I don't think it would do well for muskie hook sets or figure 8s.

Thanks Flambeauski for the information.I had the same concern with the hook sets and figure 8s. I will have to look at a few other rods.
