Location: Hayward, WI | I've had a new Okuma Red Isis sitting around here for a couple weeks now. As you can see, I got the one with the big carbon fiber double paddle handle. I REALLY like the look and feel of the handle. I haven't used it out fishing yet, but I have a good feeling it will work really well.
In the pictures I compared it to a standard Induron 400 double paddle. I also compared it to the free Induron handles a lot of us are using. Lengthwise, the carbon fiber handle sits right in the middle of the two Induron handles. From the center where the handle attaches to the reel to the center of the paddles/grips, the standard double paddle measures 4 CM, the carbon double paddle measure 5 CM, and the Induron power handle measures 6 CM.
It might not sound like a big difference, but it is. Even without reeling in a bait, I can tell that the carbon handle has a longer throw than the stock Induron handle. The jump from the carbon handle to the power handle feels like less of a difference, which I guess makes sense on a percentage of length basis.
The big double paddles let you really get your pointer finger, middle finger, and thumb onto the handle, and it's a nice grippy rubber. Seems like they should be pretty grippy with wet hands.
I really like bigger double paddle handles, and this certainly is one. I'm pretty sure Mark said the carbon handle will fit the Indurons. I'm tempted to put one of these on my new Induron rather than the Power handle.
My Okuma supply is building.... 3 Indurons, 1 Red Isis, 1 Magda, and 1 8'6" XH. I bought a Gander Mountain linecounter reel to try out this year. Other than that, every musky reel I'll be using in my boat in 2009 will be an Okuma...
Had nothing better to do so I thought I would put up this little review and a few pictures for those of you that might be curious about these reels.

Location: Hayward, WI | I think they go for about $160, but I managed to get this one brand new on Ebay for $110. A company had a bunch on there selling for 89-99, but I waited too long and all of those seem to be gone now. Still, this seems to be a very nice, very smooth reel for $160. I don't know if I'll like it more than the Indurons or not yet - using it will tell, but it seems very nice. Plus, it's a sweet red and gold color - might be easier to convince a girlfriend or wife to buy this one since it's "pretty."

Location: Hayward, WI | Ryan, Mark from Okuma would be able to answer that better than me, but I think the Isis has differently cut gears, and I know they have fewer, but higher grade bearings than the Induron. The Red Isis also comes with more expensive handles - whether it be the machined power handle or the carbon fiber twin paddle handle.
John, the double handle was on the reel when I ordered it. This is the Red Isis 400T, which I think stands for "twin" handle. The 400P is the power handle one that you ordered. I think if you get a hold of Mark (California_Muskie), you can buy one of the double paddles from him. If you like longer double paddle handles with bigger grips I think you'll like this one.

Location: Hayward, WI | Sounds sweet John! If you are using it to pull Cowgirls, you might still want to stick with the power handle. I won't know until I use it, but I'm betting you might still like how much easier the Power Handle works for 10's. I guess if you had both and could swap, you'd have the best of both worlds!

Location: Racine, Wi | John, the carbon handle should work well for pulling the 10's, but so does the power handle. That carbon handle is really sweet. I threw one last fall and will be throwing it this year again, and LOVE it. |

Location: Land of the Musky | Just got mine in today!! Can't wait to use them. Took a few pictures of both handles next to my TE400 power handle. I think the twin handle will be more than enough I think my TE400 just got shelved for the 2009 season and the Red Isis is half the price. Like the anodized red/gold look too.

Location: Ontario | Do you guys know if the Red Isis 250 has the clicker drag as well? It is worded like this on their website:
Engaged Levelwind And On/Off Clicker On 400 Size Reels
Does that mean the Levelwind is only on the 400 or both?
Thanks,
Matty |

Yes for the clicker and the 400 is a level wind.
"Engaged levelwind on 250/400 models"
Here is a good spot to get information on the US Okuma reels I found.

Location: Hayward, WI | Matty, I'm pretty sure only the 400 size has the engaged level wind and clicker. I haven't had a 250 size in my hand to look for sure, but the way I read it on the website is that only the 400 series have those two features.

Location: Ontario | Thanks for the info guys. I can see some pretty good deals out there on the Abu EXT series. I think I am leaning this way as I need a few reels and I can save some money with these. Any thoughts oropinions on this reel? Sorry for taking this from an Okuma to an Abu discussion. |

Location: Ontario | Thanks Cut, but I actually got a line on some that are priced very aggressively so they end up being considerably cheaper. I was looking forward to giving the Red Isis a shot, but these Abus just suit the budget better this year. |

Location: Minnesota | The deals are out there; I picked up an 6600EXT for $99 at Joes Sporting Goods about a month ago. It says they are currently out of stock, not sure if they are getting more in or not. |

| Abu Garcia discontinued the EXT reels, that's why they're all so cheap and on clearance right now. they were available for only one year before being discontinued...you can form your own opinion on what that means.
the Indurons and Red Isis reels have received positive reviews from users, have been well-supported from day one by Okuma / Mark Rogers right here on MuskieFirst, and have had some improvements based on hard use by muskie fishermen. Okuma has quickly forged a reputation in the muskie market for providing exceptional and very individualized customer service. it's clear that they intend to support this reel into the future.
here's the transcript from the online seminar with Mark Rogers:

Location: Minnesota | I had heard that about the EXT, valid point. The nice, but unfortunate, part about ABU is that they are easy to fix and work on. I have only one Induron that I used last year, I like what I see thus far.

Location: Ontario | Thanks for the link Lambeau, very informative. Please dont think I have anything against Okuma, in fact, my intention was to buy 3 of them. However, I am in Canada and with the deal I am getting on the 6600 EXT, it works out to be $100 difference per reel. If I was buying 1, I could justify that, but $300 was hard to turn away from. |
