With the popularity of the Green Bay Fishing show with the "Musky Focus" it would nice to have a show the caliber of Milwaukee up here in central/east central WI. I think it would do very well.

I totally agree with you. I went to Green Bay Show on Friday and it was as bad as it was 4 years ago when i told myself i'd never go back.

When you set up a show in Milwaukee you draw from a much higher population with the surrounding communities. When you do that in GB you lower that number quite a bit. Ask the vendors who did the GB show last year which was the "year of the musky". I've heard they didn't do so well. Seems odd that I would drive 2 hrs up north every weekend during the summer but not make a 1.5 hr drive south once during the winter. Many of the popular vendors will be in New London this weekend I guess for now that is the best around this area.

All these shows started when someone saw there was an oppurtunity to sell to a target market. It may be time for you to take a chance and promote a show in Northern Wisconsin.

I didnt know they didnt do so well in Green Bay. Jeff your right it's only a 1.5 hrs away and that is nothing for a drive. I was just dreaming of having a big show up here with multiple days and multiple speakers. I've been going to the new london show since the beginning 20 years ago and I have to agree that is a great one day show!

They did a show years ago in neenah at the tri county arena having a musky only show,it lasted one or two years.....I think new london makes up for a show in the area.

I do believe that a musky specific show would do very well in North eastern WI. It could certainly mirror the Milwaukee show, given population considerations.
I have been to both.
The key is marketing. It may be a tough time to talk about spending money, but if you do not, you lose your slice of the market share to be had.
From my perspective, the GB show needs a more aggressive marketing agent to seek out and convince these vendors of the fear of loss! There are so many willing consumers to attend and buy from a GB show. It was mentioned, that central WI would attend a GB show, too. Certainly obvious, from a logistics stand point. The numbers could be staggering.
I would be willing to help implement a sales initiative for 2010. I love the sport. Perhaps, someone from Brown County will read this and take action.
Good luck!

I've done the "Green Bay show" a number of years (in various booths). I have a lot of respect for Dan Laubenstein the promoter and his team. They get lots of publicity out there and promote the heck out of the show. Last year (year of the Musky) there were a couple of well known vendors including several musky specific dealers (Guide's Choice, Rollie & Helen's among others) and guess what? the majority of the attendees seem to spend their money at the bargain vendors that bring flea market kind of stuff. The numbers don't lie. If the majority of the attendees were spending money at the "musky booths" you'd see more of them showing up and staying with the show. By the time we get to March most of the folks who really are interested in going to a "Musky show" have already gone to Chicago or Milwaukee. Not trying to be a wet blanket but I just don't think the reality of the situation would justify another "musky show".

IMHO another show would just dilute the limited market even more. The reason the Milwaukee show does well is because it is pretty much the only one in WIsconsin. If there were more the number of people at each show would drop and make it hard for the vendors to make up the considerable amount of money it takes to attend one of these shows.

Like Pete said it is a flea market kind of thing up there, I did buy a Sham Wow there myself. That might be some of the problem as we go looking for serious stuff and for a general fishing show it is not there. For the first time I had a booth there and did OK but I was the only vendor with hard baits (it also helped to have a few good sticks helping me out also), Guides Choice had some hard baits but I was the only manufacturer (Roberts outdoors was clearing Bucher stuff). Unless you know you can sell enough stuff the cost is tough to swallow at over $400 for a booth, I am lucky that I live 20 minutes away or the hotel costs would be on there also. Costs are a big thing even for the big guys.

I think to be successful around here it would have to be a little multispecies in the lines of Esox Angler as in Muskie, Northern Pike and Walleye. There are to many that fish for all of them to ignore. That would get the crowds so the vendors could move some product to cover there costs, if they do not make money they will not be back or survive like any business. Around here it would have to be early enough in the year that the river is not open as then you would have a bunch of serious customers fishing. I have seen it happen before at Muskie Magic in New London over the years, with long winters they want to get out.
