I have the filters, oil, etc. Is it hard to do?? Is there a drain hole (like on a car?) I have never done an engine myself but it cant be that hard, right??

I have a 50hp & 9.9 kicker, both 4 strokes and it is just stupid for me to pay what they are charging me. Plus, it is just a hassle for me to bring it to a dealer.

How do you change the oil in the crankcase? The lower units were no problem at all.

Thanks, Rob

If you have the owners manuals check them out first. I have a Merc 50 hp. and the manual made it easy. I think on mine there was a drain plug/hole left side of the shaft just maybe half way down (looking from the rear of the motor). Turn the motor to right, and tilt it up so that drain hole is on the bottom side of the lower unit. Remove the plug and drain! I put the plug back in, tilted down, and repeated the process a couple times just to make sure I had all the oil out. Replace the filter, and add as much new oil as called for.

I'm not sure if all motors are the same, but it was a piece of cake on mine. Either way, your manual should tell you how to do it step by step.

Unfortunately my manual says take it to a dealer for yearly maintenance. No instructions what so ever.

Thanks for the reply,

Wow, they don't even tell you how to do simple maintenance!? If my instructions don't work for your motor, try asking your question over at walleyecentral.com. LOTS of people with LOTS of experience with motors over there.

There is a drain plug, I believe you have to use an allen wrench for it. I also think that you will need to remove the lower engine cover to get the oil filter off on the 50.
