I need to vent!

Was out on the water Tuesday night. You would think that Tuesday would result in low pressure and relaxing fishing, boy was I wrong. The first spot I fish, a boat motors up between me and the point I am working and starts casting like he belonged there. I actually had to stop casting because he left me no room to fish. The worst part of it was that he had a young kid in the back of the boat. Not exactly the way I want our future musky fisher's to learn.

I left that spot, after reciting a brief ettiquette lecture, only to be cut off on the next two spots I fished. I fished until about 8:00 and then loaded up the boat after being cut off for the sixth time(second time by the same boat).

This all happened on Pelican lake which is about 3600 acres and absolutely loaded with structure. You would think these folks could find somewhere to fish other than the 1/4 acre I happened to be casting at the time. Whoever said the worst day fishing is better than the best day at work hasn't experienced enough of these days on the water. I'm starting to agree that a potato gun may be the answer.

Sorry for complaining but I had to get it off my chest.

Ok Norm, here is the flat honest truth nobody cut you off you just got to THIER SPOT before they did, you should realize by now that the lake is all thiers and you are intruding on thier lake and thier spots I am guilty of this intrusion myself as described to me by such a lake owner during a similar instance to your recent encounter. 3000 acre lake nobody around while I am fishing a rock bar suddenly a boat roars past me only to stop about 30 yards infront of my drift I thanked the person for creating a large wake and cutting me off and then was told that I should keep myself in Illinois where I belong and off of his lake so you see it's your fault not the lake owners[:(]

I would think this guy knows absolutely nothing about fishing if he is cutting you off. That would totally eliminate him from ever catching any fish on the "Dead Sea". Just please tell me were not going there this weekend!!!

Hey guys:
You could always take a lesson from the Navy in such situations....
Instead of lobbing shells from the 5" guns across their bows,
just cast a 14" monster bait with big ol' trebles across the
bow light at about head high.
Even the hardest of heads usually gets that message.

Side note: Equally effective for crotch rocket jockeys
and water skiers too....[]

John, now I feel so stupid. I never even thought of it from the lakeowner's point of view. I now realize that he, not I, deserved the lecture. I need to find these gentlemen to not only apologize for my actions, but to also thank them for letting me fish on their lake at all. My oh my do I feel silly now.

If you go a little farther north it doesn't get any better. I've noticed, during the first two weeks of June a significent increase in the number of boats on the water i.e. fishermen. So the probability that your going to be cutoff also incerases. I just wonder what it will be like come July and August.

My Grandpa use to carry a few walnuts in his boat. He would throw them at any boat that got too close, especially speedboats driving by. Most of the idiots got he message. If they came over to talk to him, he would exaplain, "I'm an old man. If I can hit you with a walnut you are way too close." And then he would take out a pen/paper and write down the registration number of the boat. Worked like a charm, although that was 25 years ago.

Happens all the time on most any lake in Wisconsin. I simply turn the electric to high, zoom around the guy without comment, and resume fishing. If the guy is directly in the line of my cast, I resume casting landing the lure directly to the boat that has crowded me, just off the bow. They usually get the message.

Another great tactic is to switch to a creature at that time. If the other guy gets a fish hot, and it doesn't hit him, I usually pick her off from under his rig. There are many anglers who have had this happen over the years while I was 'following them'....[:sun:]

I use PATIENCE...sucker cuts me off then I continue to fish in, on + around him/them....some might call it hardheadedness but so be it...I'll also electric just past them + continue to fish. I see absolutely no reason to move on; I say nothing to them at all + that usually drives them nuts...I have sang 'Jimmy Crack Corn" + other songs + they look at you like you are crazy...if me brother is w/ me he will for sure say something + will also cast at will in their direction...try holding your ground next time or ask the peon if he'd like to get some more boats + conduct a "musky drive"...one boat sits there fishing while the other boats herd fish to them.... You guys have some strange ways for dealing with pressure. Ever consider looking for other "spots" just as productive (and due to the pressure the lake is obviously recieving... possibly an even MORE productive "spot")?

Current, wind, thermocline, DickP's "Twilight Zone", baitfish, travel routes, etc. all offer new "structures" that 99.9% of the yahoos cutting you off will never find. When the easy to find Grand Central Station is busy with "tourists" be smart and catch fish in "other" places.

Just a thought.....

Good point Jason but my options don't allow for searches, especially on the river![:sun:]

I just had a kind of crazy idea. A bit self-destrcutive, but crazy enough to teach people to stay away from your boat when you are fishign a spot. Stick a nice loud stereo in your boat, and when someone comes in right by you, turn it on and just friggin' crank some Disturbed. A couple 15" subwoofers would really drive them off. Especially if you looked right at them and sang along with the words...[]

Jlong, I agree with you 100%, unfortunately a large percentage of these yahoos will stop and cast next to you regardless of where you are because they want to know what you are fishing and why. I think the fact that another boat is fishing there makes that spot more attractive to them, especially if they have never fished it before.

Another solution would be to fish less pressured waters, but Pelly is only a half hour drive after work and there shouldn't be that many dumb@$$'$ around during the week. Unfortunately with the added popularity of muskie fishing it looks like we are gonna have to get used to it. [:blackeye:]

Norm, I agree with you too. If they follow you, finding "other" spots won't help. Then most of the above tactics are good one's to deploy.

But, when there is a certain "famous" rock pile or deep weedline that EVERYONE knows is a good spot... expect Jo Jerkoff to intrude on you.

Spongy.... no matter what your situation... there are ALWAYS other spots. I fish a lot of small lakes, and when pressure is high.... before I vacate I can always THINK up some theory as to why a location I've been ignoring may actually hold a fish. I give it a shot before either confronting people or leaving.

Jason...true BUT...one section of 1/4 mile river...very few skis....little time...these are factors I have to deal w/ at times + going other places usually is NOT an option, especially due to ramp location for access! I'm not a confrontational guy as you should know but when I'm fishing pretty much the only good spot I stay there if I was there first. I have never cut anyone off + will not intentionally. Now if I were fortunate enough to have the # of ski filled lakes as indicated up there, then I'd invite others to come join me on a spot![;)] When rockfishing, this occurs + I do move on as I have spots in my head that I can go to![:sun:]

Sponge... a 1/4 mile stretch of river is probably more water than some of my favorite 100 acre lakes. But, your point is well taken. I'll also confess.... I am guilty of launching a large reef hawg at an intruder to "claim" my territory. Problem is.... it rarely works. If they have the gall to cut you off that bad... nothing will stop them.

I found the soloution, Paint your boat to look like a DNR boat & wear clothing that from a distance you look like DNR, now everybody will stay away, far far away []

A piece of broom stick painted red, drilled out on one end for about 10 inches of cannon fuse, and tossed leisurely over the side may get some distance...[:praise:]

I have but one trick up my sleeve that has worked for me in the past. This will only work when fishing a point or weedline etc. into the wind. When some "hole jumper" pulls in in front of me I motor past and start on the spot upwind of them. I then let theboat "backslip" slowly toward the offensive dolt. Most of the time they will, with out even realizing it let their boat slide back as well. This keepsthe distance the same between boats. Before you know it you are on the spot and they are backked off of it wondering what happened. If the guy just won't back up, pull your troller up and pretend that you have a problem with it. Holler to the guy that your sorry but your trolling motor just broke and you don't want to drift into him. He will then move, when he does this, put the troller back down and say, why I'll be damned, this thing is working fine now.[] Seems to work every time for me.
This is in no way to be misconstrued with any well known tournament tactics. []

The clown probably would'nt have had the stones to do it if his kid was'nt with him. The kid is carte'blanche to do
anything without reprisal, which is just a weak.
Time to grin and bear it with a kid around.
Nice ethics for the kid to experience,I feel sorry for
him.I just can't believe the gall so many anglers have these days.
