Hey everyone, I know this post is kinda off the subject of muskie fishing but it is something that looks like alot of fun. Over the last couple years I have began to see pictures of huge northerns caught through the ice in March-April in Minnesota. Many that look to be over 40inches. I have really wanted to try and catch these giant pike but have been able to find very little information on where and when. I would really like to find someone that would either guide my son and I or just get us on the right track to catching these giants. Any info someone might have would be awesome. Thanks Gary J

I'd do one of two things.
1) Become a registred user
2) Use the Ice First board, excellent area for Q&A on fishing up there.

Gary, I would definitly contact Mike Crawford. I'm not sure what his number is but he lives in Bemidji MN. I know that this kid is on the big pike this time of year. I saw his photos from last year and it was incredible, so many over 20lbs. I got his card but am unsure what I did with it. I was going to go with him this winter but just didn't have the money. I don't know how much info he would give out being he guides but its worth a shot. I will look and see if I have his info, if so i will post it.

I also agree Mike Crawford is the way to go. I know that he just put 5-6 over 40" on the ice this past weekend. He really knows his stuff when it comes to Ice fishing big pike. I went with him three years ago and we had a 50 fish day with 12 over 40 and two over 45 inches. If I were you I would definitly contact him soon because I know he is really busy guiding this time of year. Hope this info helps!

Pike season closed in Minnesota on February 22nd. The only lakes that may have an extended season would be the canadian border waters like Lake of the Woods and Rainy Lake. All other lakes are closed. Best of luck!

Thanks for all the great remarks! Indeed I was able to get to Lake of the Woods this last weekend, and yes we did put some very nice fish on the ice. We ended up putting 6 on the ice over 40 inches with the largest being a 41.5 inch 20+lber! I will be heading back up every weekend until ice out in search of that 50inch monster! Gary if your looking at heading up there just drop me an email at [email protected] and I will help you out. Hope all of you fellow muskie nuts enjoying the winter! Thanks Mike Crawford
