"I love talking about fishing. Even if you're not going to come to my place, I'll still help you out"...
And that's the kind of guy Steve is. All of his guides are like that. I've fished with a LOT of guides in a lot of places. Lots of good ones, some bad, but I haven't met a better bunch of guys than Steve and his guides anywhere. They're all about helping you catch fish, whether you're hiring them or not, whether they know you or not. Steve has a passion for muskie fishing, and a passion for sharing what he's learned in a lifetime of fishing and guiding.
I've seen a lot of guys being all hush-hush about what's going on out there, like to keep their secrets to themselves. Not these guys, man. There's no secrets at AML. Anyone there will gladly take your map, mark it up, show you where they've been seeing fish, what they've had success with, what colors. You watch that video, and you think its gonna be a commercial for Andy Myers Lodge, but its about 30 seconds of that and 20 minutes of Steve talking about how great Eagle Lake is and why. It's no BS from what I've seen. Personal best muskies, two years in a row. Multiple opportunities at 50"+ fish, 29.5" and 30" walleyes, 10 minutes apart... Even an idiot can stumble into a big one once in a while, but luck only takes you so far. Add in knowledgable guides who put 110% into their jobs because they love what they do, and a world class fishery? If I can have that kind of success out there, ANYBODY can. I can honestly say that a week on Eagle fishing with Herbies guys made me a better angler than YEARS of fishing around WI before that.
But that's that's all just gravy, man. I go there because its fun. At the end of the day, no matter how tired I am, no matter how sunburned I am, no matter how tough the fishing was? It was FUN. That's a big part of what the AML staff brings to the whole experience for me. I'm out there to have a good time. And if you can't have a good time out there on Eagle? Maybe you ought to try golf or something instead!
