| a few posts back a couple of folks mentioned the avet brand of reels for db 10's and the such. has anyone out there tried them and / or know how these might compare to the trinidad or saltist? the avet mxl comes in a 5.8:1 single speed and a 6.3:1 / 3.8:1 ratio two speed version which is interesting as well. it coming in a left handed model is what really grabbed my interest...
thanks... |

| They look sweet, but wish they came with levelwind -- I just can't imagine casting without one! |

| I own two of the Avets. I have the sx two speed reel. They are now making that model with magnetic cast control which I hear is incredible.
I also have the MXJ MC single speed 5.8:1 reel. The J signifies that it is a narrow spool. The MC signifies that it is magnetic cast controlled. This is the reel that I recommend for cranking in big blades.
One thing to note on the Avets is that they are all lever drag. This lever also engages the reel. It takes about 20-30 casts to used to the reel and engaging it at the correct drag position. I used a black magic marker to choose the amount of drag that I want. I did this so I can put it back to that spot upon engaging the reel.
They are tough high quality reels built in a machine shop in Cali. One of the owners reels left-handed and that is the reason for all of their reels being available in left retrieve. |
