Location: Rhinelander. | I just wanted to say that you guys doing some of the painting today are way off the charts. Your work is just outstanding> I have in past as a manufacturer painted thousands of baits. I sure never put in the time or had the artistic you all do. I think when you have actually painted baits you appreciate what others have done even more. Please keep it up as I love seeing the new things you come up with. Very very good job guys!!!

| I still have some Zig-Zags.
As a matter of fact, I am packing up the truck right now so I can do an air-brushing/lure building seminar for my daughter's 7th grade art class. I'm glad that I have lots of exotic woods to show them because part of their art studies actually borders on wood shop. The teacher asked me if I could bring some of the first lures that I made so they could see the progression I've made. I found some of the first Castors that I made for my own use and almost wet myself. You never see how far you've come unless you look back once in a while.
I'll post a report later today. I think it's going to be lots of fun.

| Todays seminar in art class went over great. There was interest in the air-brush, and everybody got to try their hand at it. I also took along a bunch of gliders and other lures so that the kids could see a variety of styles. There were just as many fishing questions as there were painting questions, and since the teacher is into wood-working herself, she's talking about letting the kids paint lures that she would cut out. I left my air-brush behind for them to practice with, and my daughter told me that 10 kids stayed in from recess so they could paint. Other classes complained that the fishing guy didn't talk to their classes, so I'm doing the other 7th grade class and the 2 eigth grade classes next week. It was a good time for all of us, and some real interest and amazement in what the air-brush could do and how it worked. There will probably be several guests in the basement this weekend

| Don, I'm curious about your company. I've heard you refer to it in the past off and on, but without too much detail. Would you mine posting more about it?
Beav, I salute your efforts with the kids. You created a situation in which everyone wins. Building and fishing are the types of "hands on" hobbies that are so lacking in today's world and were so commoplace when I was a kid.
In my time, we fished because it was among the few basically free things we could do. Unlike a lot of stuff kids do today, the cost was basically nil, no subscription fees, no problems with access to local ponds or lakes, and we all did it together. There were no "rules," no refs, no scoreboard, no screaming parents on the sidelines, no competition, no nothing. A can of worms, a cork, and a hook. If you were having fun, you were doing it right. Ironically that is still true today and its all still there for the kids and it hasn't changed much. Hook, line, sinker, good old fashioned fun on a fine spring or summer day.
The building you're showing them has an entirely different set of advantages, but they are just as pronounced in my opinion. There is something about doing things with your hands for your own purposes and amusement. The creative process is and remains forever a learning process, no matter how long you play with it. It is a way of connecting mind with body that is lacking in video games, ipods, and hanging out at the local mall.
Lol, I could go on, but I won't because I know I'm preaching to the choir, but I salute you. |
