| Need some advice guys. I am experiencing problems with my bow locator. I have Garmin 240s on the bow and at the console. My bow unit at times will work fine, and other times it will only give me a simulator mode with the simulator turned off. Is this a bad unit or is it a wiring connection problem? GArmin sent me a new wiring package, but I am reluctant to go through all the B.S. involved with installing a new transducer and wiring if it's just a bad unit. Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated. |

| Matt, unless the power is somehow flaky, the unit itself decides what mode to be in so I would say something is wrong with the unit and not the wiring. The brains are in the unit.
I am not sure what direction you wish to go but my money is on the lowrance x-85 if you can still get one and the x-91 which looks to be the same unit more or less with a new styled look. I have an eagle ultra classic which is similar in most respects except power and it's a trouble free rock solid unit. Hope this helps. |

| Matt- I'd guess the unit is going to simulator mode because it doesn't see a transducer signal, i.e., as if it was hooked up in a in-store demo. These new digital (computer controlled) devices sometimes have automatic software stuff that most people never even know about, i.e., like sensing if it has a transducer attached or not.... no signal -> go to simulator mode..... Most likely either the cable to the transducer or the transducer itself is bad. Probably best to test it at the lake- Just hook up new transducer & cable & dangle the transducer in the water if it works, i.e., gives a depth reading close to the console unit reading = install the new transducer & cable.

| Matt:
I have 240's on my boat also. While at the steep ramp on Lake X last time, I unloaded my boat poorly and busted off the plastic end cap to my Motor Guide which sliced open the insulation and nicked a few of the wires from bow transducer to the bow unit. Occassionally (before I fixed it) the wires would short on eachother and the unit would give me a message that it lost connection to the transducer. If you are not getting that message, I doubt the problem is with your transducer.
BTW both of my 240's will occassionally give me false readings of 1200ft+ while displaying a moving bottom. |

| Matt, if you are in the Twin Cities, just take your unit off and take it into Capra's. Ask to talk to Greg in Electronics. Tell him that Mike Hoen sent you in and ask him to hook the unit to a new transducer in the store. This should tell you if your problem is with the unit or the transducer. Oops didn't read carefully enough. Swap the two units from the console to the bow and see if the problem follows the unit or stays with the transducer. Should let you know which needs work, the unit or trancducer. |

| I guess the problem is right now it's working fine, but it happens for no apparant reason(kind of out of the blue). I am headed up to Northern WI next week and have a feeling that it will happen again when I least expect it. At this point I don't really have time to experiment. Thanks for your help guys and keep sending ideas my way. |
