| I am looking for a LEFT handed Reel and Rod set up to throw Double Cowgirls . Rod has to be at leas an 8 footer. Any tips on what would work best? Iam not looking to spend a lot of money for the reel as none of them seem to hold up very well for me. Shimano, Ambassadeur, etc. so far. Thanks for any input.

Location: Yahara River Chain | Okuma has the ticket. 8 1/2 foot extra heavy with a Iduron reel. I used it for 3 months towards the end of last season and that combo worked great.
BTW - those left side crank reels, I call them a true right handed reel.

Location: Hugo, MN | I'd buy a St. Croix Premier this spring when they release the 8'6" models. For a reel I'd go with an Okuma Induron, and get your free power handle to help with the double tens. That would be a pretty solid combo, and wouldn't break the bank. |

| IMO upgrade to the XH for Compre and/or EVX rods. Lot easier to work the big blades on the 8 with the extra stiffness. |

Location: Oshkosh | Well, from what I read it just said that you wanted to go cheap on the reel, so Im gonna suggest getting a St. Croix Big Dawg for the rod. Very light and works great for casting soft plastics also. For the reel, do a serch on here for Avet reels. I believe that they make a few models for you lefties and there made here in the us. A good option if you do decide to spend some money on the reel is a Toro 61. A lot of guys on here are using them for Cowgirls and I think they work great.

| I use an 8'6" XH BullDawg rod and a Calcutta 401 TE. Works great for me and I throw a lot of double-10's and double-9's. Don't buy an Abu Record for this application...they don't like double-10's much. I've also used a Corvalus for double-10's for a week up in Canada when one of my Records broke. Held up fine, just doesn't have the power of a TE. |

Location: Verona, WI | For a rod also don't forget a Tackle Industries rod. I had one and just sold it in order to buy another one of different length. Really good rods for the price.

| St. Croix Premier 8'6" XH paired with a Daiwa Saltist 30LW, Went to Eagle lake at the end of last Summer and abused the combo. Never once had a problem with it and I would recommend it to anyone out there. |

Location: Michigan | I am using an AVET LX single speed 6:1 reel with cast controlon a St. Croix Sling Blade rod. I believe the reel is the closest thing to a Trinidad as you can get in a lefty. I find myself wanting to just smoke the blades and end up working harder than needed. If you point the rod at the bait and retrieve normal, it is pretty effortless and it moves along at a good clip. Seems like a pretty good combo, but... The reel takes some getting used to... The rod may be a bit too soft for my preference. Verdict is still out... Big money for something I am not Thrilled with??? |

| I am sure there are many good rods that will work great with double cowgirls. I personally use a St. Croix Sling blade. The reel though is another story. I have tried almost everything out there. The cheap reels and I am not naming them may work OK for a bit but in the end, they always fall apart. This is not an area were you want to cheap out. There will be nothing but regrets and ruined fishing trips.
I have also tried some of the high speed retrieve reels like the Trinida's and Saltist's. I found that they reeled in the lure with amazing speed. The draw backs were that they were backlash beasts (I sure with more practice that could be reduced, but I doubt eliminated) and still not the easiest to reel. The manual engage is a reel pain in the ass and line pile up can be a problem with no level wind on them.
There are only two reels I can truly feel comfortable recommending.
One is the Revo Tor 60 or 61 for lefties in the 5.4:1 ratio. Put the power handle on this and it is not bad. Cast amazingly well and reels in fairly easy. The reel will also last. Reel will have lots of other applications as well. The winch is a good choice too but they are slower and I can't see to many other uses for it.
And now the best of the best. The Calcutta 400 Ljv te. This reel is simply amazing. Casts like a dream and reels Cowgirls in like they were bass spinner baits. With 25 inches per crank, they have plenty of speed. The te's are built like tanks and will last a long time. The only draw back is the handle. You must keep it toward you or in the down position or it can engage on your cast. I feel that with a counterbalance handle, the problem would be eliminated. They are pricey but will never give you a problem and will last a lifetime with good maintenance.
Regards

Location: syracuse indiana | well i highly suggest the rod to be a 9ft xxh mag tackle industries rod and for the reel use a calcutta 400b with a powerhandle and completly full of line. or get the revo toro winch that reel will really pull the big blades in. but with the calcutta you can still use it for other baits too....bill |

Location: On the water | Slingblade and Trinidad 14 works the best for me. I almost never throw a backlash and the trini seems to cast further than the CTE 401.. |
