Location: Hayward, WI | I know some of you guys here like the Bass Pro Cat Maxx Catfish rods for sucker rods. I am thinking about getting one or two as a sucker rod, and maybe do double duty as a trolling rod (I don't troll a LOT so I don't need anything fancy). Probably would pair the rods with Okuma line counters.
My question is which one should I get?
The canditates would be:
7'6" H: 1-5 oz lure rating, 20-40 lb line rating
7'9" MH: 1 1/2-4 oz lure, 20-50 lb line rating
8'0" MH: 1/2-2 oz lure, 12-20 lb line rating
I wanted the 8' length, but it sounds like this rod might be pretty light for a sucker rod. I thought I heard some on here recommend the 8 footer though, so I was just wondering if the rating on the rod is off.
The 7'6" has probably the best lure weight rating, but is also the shortest (probably not a huge deal for a non-casting rod). The 7'9" seems to be a good compromise. The 7'9" has a lower lure weight rating, but a higher line rating than the 7'6" which seems odd too.

Location: WI | I have the 7' 6" H. It is a decent rod for sucker fishing. I have only trolled with it once or twice. The only way that you'll want to use this rod is for those two uses though as it is a HEAVY rod. It would suit your needs though, and is priced very well too.

Location: Oconto Falls, WI | The 7'6" H is what I have used as my sucker rod, and the limited trolling that I did with it. Plenty of backbone for setting the hooks, and due to it being glass it maintained a decent bend for fighting.
No longer my sucker rod as it has been dedicated to wireline trolling for me. It has been modified by changing the tip to a spring tip for the wire therefore I can't use it for anything else. Use it for running BIG divers like 12" Franky Bait, Talonz Deepthreats, and Hookers into rocks 30-40' down.
In my opinion it is a great sucker rod. | |
