How fast should a 16 foot modified v with a 25 hp johnson 2 cyl go? I had it running wide open and the speedometer didn't move (it starts at 15) I would figure I was going over 20.

Sounds like your speedo is not working properly. I would say in the low 20mph.

Sounds like your speedometer is not working. First, check the pitot hole to see if it is plugged. If so, gently use by HAND a 1/8" drill bit to work the plug out. m

Thanks Mikie, I will try that.

Most pitot operated speedometers are notoriously optimistic, reading much faster than the actual speed. It's a rarity to find one that is accurate, two of my three boats that have had speedos were off by quite a bit. The new Cobra is the first boat I've owned that's had a speedo that actually gets close to the real speed.

If you own, or have a friend that has a hand held GPS, that's going to give you your most accurate readings.

As far as your boat's speedo, make doubly sure that you don't have the line pinched and that the pitot hole is cleared out. It's really easy to get a pebble or piece of wood (as in bumping a stump) lodged in the hole.

Good luck,

Second Steve's suggestion of using a GPS to better indicate boat speed. Thorpe tube speedometers just aren't accurate....[:knockout:]

I checked the speedometer and there is no pilot hole, there is a little grey dot on the bottom. Is this a weird type of speedometer?

Ok, I decided to get a gps for speed as well as other stuff, and took the boat onto pewaukee and the boat got up to 17.7 mph and guess what I noticed? The speedometer was working, I guess I just didnt' have enough water to get it up to full speed before. Also, why only 17.7 mph? I would think it would go faster. The prop on it is smaller than similar motors, how much difference would a bigger prop make? Also I hit a rock on pewaukee and there is a small chip in the prop, so I don't know how much difference that will make.
