Do you ever notice the best producing colors are rarely the best selling colors????

I must say that it happens much more in the muskie fishing sector than in the bass and walleye fishing circles.
I think that the numbers get a little skewed because so few muskies are caught compared to other fish. Think how many muskies are caught on all black. Then again, how many fall muskies are actually caught on Cisco colored lures.
Certain colors appeal to certain guys while other guys go in a different direction. Bright and gawdy vs. Plain and natural
That's why when you buy or make a lure that you fall in love with, the best thing is to paint it in colors that aren't your first picks, because the colors are made for the fish to eat, not us.
My daughter will throw a FIRETIGER anything all day. That includes when she switches species during the day. But, she catches fish. Smallies, walleyes, panfish....all on Firetiger. Ask her to switch, and she'll tell you, "If they are hungry, they'll eat this."

I have to agree. I cant imagine why some colors just fly our of my shop. and others that are twice as effective sit here until a smart guy calls.

The best example of a super productive color is Olive Frog. Man I have caught Muskies all over the country on Olive frog Lokes, Slashers, NILS, Little Claws and anything else I paint in that pattern. It is just a great color for trolling Muskies. But it is one of my lowest selling colors. Fire perch and Cisco are my highest selling colors.

On St Clair the top 4 colors for me that catch fish are in order

#1 White Belly Perch
#2 Coco Perch( brown barred tan body with gold scales)
#3 Olive Frog
#4 Black Sucker

Two of those are very slow sellers Black Sucker and Olive Frog. There are guys out there like Mark Pauling from Ohio who has over 600 Muskies from Lake St Clair registered in Muskies Incs Lunge log. You would not believe the number of fish and Big fish that he caught on Black Sucker.

My wife puts it like this, Baits either catch fish or fishermen. Then there a few colors that do both. I am curious to see how how fast this pink and purple (Girly Trout) sells, Kingfisher

every region has its favorite colors. water clarity make that very feasible. we send baits to parts in africa for grouper. from there to northern ontario water colors differ. on home waters l.s/clair is seemingly the most color sensitive.. . i have to agree the musky ugly colors are best here. how about the old coachdog, 9 dollar bass, blk sucker pearl wh/belly.. then we can discuss straights versus jointed??
it will never end

i sell a few lures on e-bay and find the brighter colours sell best, natural colours being a bit slower, but with lures made to order the more subdued colours are more popular.
I've got to say kingfisher that i like the purple/pink colour scheme you've done i can see myself knocking up a few of those to try

I think alot of it has to do with what people THINK muskies eat, compared to what they actually do eat. If you fish alot of weeds and never tried a frog pattern then you won't see what you're missing until you try it. Think outside the box and sometimes you'll be rewarded (especially on pressured lakes that have their go-to lures)...but other times it will just be an experiment... either way you'll still learn something.

Do you have any pics of these? I can visualize the Coco perch & black sucker, but am drawing a blank on the other two.

pure black is the to go colors for bucktails, but a lots of lure builders seems to forget 1 thing black is also very good for crankbaits, of course thats not the best selling colors, maybe anglers hate to pay same price for a ugly looking black cranks

Here are the 4 colors I was talking about. Now it was mentioned aboput throwing a frog colored bait up into the weeds. but that has not been the way it has worked for us.

We have tremendous results using Olive frog patterns out on Lake St Clair. Also one many other inland Lakes in Michigan and water color doesnt seem to matter. In 2007 we boated a 30 pound 48 incher on a northern Michigan clear and I mean gin clear lake . We were in 45 feet of water and the lure was out on a Planer board running down about 11 feet. I had a 6 fish day on Lake St. Clair on Olive frog Slashers in 2006 all in 15 to 18 feet of water 5 miles off shore. Murray lake in the middle of Michigan is stained and green and Olive frog is hot there as well. There are no frogs swimming around in 45 feet of water. The spots have a lot to do with why a Musky zeros in on a bait painted with that pattern.

But the guy who is looking for a good color for trolling always passes on that pattern unless he has seen it work. W e never leave home with out at least 4 Olive frogs . Kingfisher

mota-That is how I have cursed myself into having 40+ colors/bait type! I listen to guys like you Nothing like trying to herd and keep inventory on 600+ lures and counting. I just got a quote today on putting on a 3rd car garage extra deep so I can deal with it...

As for colors, I have gotten a lot of guys telling me the same thing in that the popular colors (my big sellers too) don't catch as many fish as the less prominent colors used (odd balls). I can't believe that fish are "taught" to stay away form baitfish colors but from what some customers tell me that is what it sounds like. Who knows? Maybe a Hindu that was once a muskie can chime in on the subject?

My brother and I always make a "natural color " bait each year when making baits out in the garage, last year the unpainted "natural" topwaters were the best producing of the baits.

absolutely fisherman love brite objects. i have many charter captains that want certain colors. they can be subtle changes, to a small red dot. seems to produce for them. one fact for st clair is. whats hot this year can be crap next year.

I always try to buy baits that are in some type of pattern wether it's perch ,firetiger or whatever becouse I can't paint the lures in patterns like you baitmakers can, it's truley an art form . BUT if the one of those fancy patterns are not working for me I can always pull out my can of black spray paint and have my way with it . My wife always asks me how that bait will stay "pretty " untill I paint it black . I just give her a shrug and go back and T the hooks and change the splitrings and stick bigger eyes on the bait ,but thats another story .

Well , I sold all the pink Girly Trouts. I even signed one of them for a guy's niece from Canada. If I had painted 5 more they all would have gone. This year I also sold all of the Olive frogs hmmmmm ? It might be catching on. Mike
