| What are your thoughts on tonneau covers? Advantages and disadvantages? Any particular brand people like (experience with multiple brands is preferred)? Looking mainly to protect gear from theft and elements, but would also like to be able to have 100% use of the bed (i.e. be able to fit tall objects into it). |

| Don't get a tonneau cover, as they are good for only keeping small things your bed, as they can only open up so much and limit your space greatly.
Get a full sized cap. You can buy new or you can search around and usually find a pretty dang nice used one for half price.
What kind of truck do you have? Long bed or 6 ft. bed? What color is it?
Caps are where it's at, Tonneau covers may look better, but their use is very limited |

| I have an "Undercover" hard tonneau cover that locks and is removeable. It keeps your stuff secure and dry and one person can remove it if you have larger items to put in the bed. Works great for me. |

I previously had a cover made by Access. It was cloth, but it locked from underneath the cover, had supports across the back, velcro along the sides and could be tightened up as it stretched. The locking mechanism made the tonneu tight enough that you could not just undo some of the velcro on the side and get an arm in there...it was that tight.
The only disadvantage is you would need a tailgate lock. And..I think they have gotten better over time. So..with the two in combination, a thief would have to cut the tonneu. If they want in, they will get in no matter how well you have it locked. Unfortunate we have people out there that are like that.

| I also have a Access cover, i have had it since 02 and it still works great. It is pretty secure, never have had anything taken, but out of sight out of mind. A topper does give more storage but for its intended purpose the Access Cover works good |

Location: minocqua, wi. | i've got the truxedo folding cover and i love it. combined with the locking tail-gate it keeps the honest crook out but it does what i want which is to keep stuff dry and out of sight, yet stows quick so that i can drive the 4-wheeler into it or throw something tall and bulky in without losing the "truck" component of the truck. |

Location: Central Iowa | I have an Access cover as well and love the thing, my truck has a locking tailgate so its fairly secure when you want it to be but could be broke into pretty easily if someone wanting in there...out of sight out of mind though. The nice thing is if you want to haul big items you just roll it all the way up to the front and you have your normal space back when needed. I will probably never own another truck without one...they give you a little bit better mileage too but not much. |

Location: midwest | I would second the "undercover" hard bed lid, instead of a tonneau cover. It's lightweight,locking, and not too bad as far as pricing goes. It takes about 3 minutes to remove and can be removed by one person. |

Location: Bristol, IN | I have a TorzaTop on my 2001 S-10 4x4. Actually get better fuel mileage with it off, yes I said off. If I were to get another it would be an Armor Lid Hard ABS Tonneau Cover. |

| I use to have a fiberglass tonneau cover on my 98 chevy, I absolutely hated it.
I couldn't even get a bucket of tip ups in there without lying them down. save your money and buy a topper. |

I decided to save my money altogether and by neither. I need the height in the bed actually like being able to stand fully upright in it. I'll have to find some other way to secure my valuables. Thanks guys! |

| I have a soft tonneau that I eventually removed becase it was more in in the way than anything else. Hinders visibility while backign up and access to the pickup bed when landing the boat. |

Location: Warroad, Mn | Guess it depends on how much you use your pickup for hauling tall stuff. I have an Access cover and it's one of the best things I've ever had. Covers up most things I haul and keeps them pretty much dry and out of the dust. If I need to haul something big it rolls up in a minute. Guess it depends on on much you need the full height of an open bed. I've had the same cover on two pickups (going back to around 2002) and it's still in very good shape even though I use it a lot. Highly recommend them.
However, the cover is cloth, and anyone with a sharp knife can easily get into the back of your pickup. Where I live and travel so far that doesn't seem to be a problem.

Location: Stockbridge, WI | When you work construction it gets to be a pain to roll the Access up all the time to get at tools and to haul taller objects around, so then I take the cover off and put my Delta toolbox in my bed. Then when I get sick of having stuff get rained on in my bed I put the Access back on. I don't think there is anything that would be perfect 100% of the time. But if anyone is going to get a cover get a Access, I had a Truxedo on my last truck and it just wasn't the same quality as an Access. |
