Winch gears

I have a C4 (5000 series) winch that I like very much except for one thing, the fast cast thumbar. It seems that I have developed a refex, that is putting my thumb on the spool when I hookset. Several times in the last 2 weeks, I have gone for a hookset, accidentally put my thumb on the spool/thumbar at the same time and pfffttttttt birdsnest. As you might guess, no fish either. I don't see where they sell a winch w/o a thumbar. Is it possible to buy a regular 6000 series C4 and put winch (3.8:1) gears in it? How expensive are the gears? the much.

p.s. how about another brand that would have no higher than 4.2:1 ratio w/o a fast cast thumbar?? thx again.

Greg,

I did the same thing accidentally a few times.

Not sure if you noticed when we were out but I removed the little black thumb rest pad from all my reels and no longer have the problem. Gave me enough room for my fat thumb and the thumb bar. I love the thumb bars and didn't want to give them up, you might want to give this a try.

Yeti, I think I resemble that remark.

Mine is working fine although none of my rods have been used anywhere near enough yet this year.
