| I have had a few misses that I caused when I ripped the bait. How many people here have taken a perfectly good target and screwed it up by ripping the bait one more time at the boat. It got me thinking that maybe if I straight retreived the bait the fish would have been in the net. Maybe on a straight retreive the fish wouldn't have even looked at it. It sure is irritating to see a fish that otherwise could have been hooked up miss. |

| Chad,
one thing to watch for is if the muskies mouths are even open when they are slashing at the bait on the rip...I have seen counless times muskies slash at baits that at first I thought they were trying to hit/eat but then it happenend enough I was looking closely at their mouths and they were closed...if a musky wants to really hit/catch a bait that you rip, it can...you are winning half the battle if they are actually hitting it with their mouths open by triggering the strike, I don't think a straight retrieve would have triggered the same response...
if they did try to eat it and missed it good chance you can get them to go on something right away ..the fish was hungry and ready to eat....come back with something else that maybe has the same action but a bit slower on the rip... |

| Two misses that I can vividly remember were with jointed crankbaits, both I came back to later and caught on the same bait cranked straight in. I don't rip jointed cranks anymore, pause yes. The misses on big plastic are just heart breaking at times. I haven't paid close enough attention or had enough occurances to notice the open or closed mouth. |

Location: Madison WI | I clearly remember 1 whole week of missing the same fish on the same bait on the same spot and my buddy had the exact same thing happen with the same fish for that week, because this fish liked to hit after the rip and then run towards us. By the time we reeled down to get rid of the slack line to set the hook the fish was gone. That fish earned a nasty nickname lol. I think we finally caught this fish but without ever actually seeing it other then the time we think we finally caught it this can never be known. |

Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | I agree with Brad. If the fish wants that lure, most times it will have it. That said, I always stop ripping the lure about 10' from the rig, and do a couple moves exactly the opposite of the rips I was doing with the intent of watching the lure into a figure 8. Most of the hits at boatside happen there for me on cranks, in the middle of that change-up. |
