| I've been using the ABU oil, mostly because it comes with their reels, and I have a bunch of it. I have also used Shimano, South Bend, Daiwa, and Penn brand oils, and the Reel Magic spray.
The Shimano and Abu oils seem comparable. The South Bend stuff is a bit thicker. It seems like thicker oils tend to slow the reels down a bit, while the thinner oils do not. But the thinner oils don't seem to last as long. One day fishing in a downpour and that's it. Logic tells me to use the Penn stuff, because it's supposedly salt and corrosion resistant, but its much thicker. They also sell a combination oil/grease they recommend for all their reels. (What manufacturer doesn't recommend their own products??) I found the reel magic stuff to be the slickest, and thinnest of the bunch, but I'm not very confident in its long term lubricating abilities. Besides, I like to only oil the parts that move.
Soooo many products out there.
What do you use, and more importantly, WHY?
Anybody out there who actually repairs and services reels: Does it even matter which one you use? Is any one better than the other? |

I use HOT SAUCE OIL AND GREASE, This oil and grease will last for weeks before I have to reoil the spool bearings, and this oil stays in the bearing, it will not spin out all over inside of your reel.

Location: Davenport, IA | I've been using the hot sauce for awhile too. It really does make your reels smoother. |

| agreed, Hot Sauce to me seems to be the best...I still carry the stuff that comes with Shimanos, Penns, and Abus in a container in the boat when i'm in a pinch or someone brings an "Abu Screamer" on board, but when I clean and lube all my reels over the winter, Hot Sauce gets the nod |

| There is no finer oil than pneumatic tool oil, I've used it for years on fishing reels and never had a problem. You can buy a quart of it for less than $20.00, any place that sells tools has it. It has a wide temp range, does not gum up and is very slick. Try it.

I agree with Richard (tackletour) has tons of info, and Richard has helped me a couple of times with some of my reel stuff he knows his reels. |
