I've got a Yamaha VMax 3.1L 200 on my Ranger I bought from Sled. I've seen 3.1L Vmax with 225 cowlings on them. Identical to mine, 3.1L, OX66, VMax all that...but 225 instead of 200. Does anyone know what makes the extra 25 hp? I'm thinking exhaust, or is it something more involved like fuel scheduling and injectors? I mean, if I can bolt something on, or swap something out for an extra 25 hp, for less than a grand, I'd be interested in that. 25 hp is 25 hp.

I've got that exact motor in a 225. I would be curious to know what makes the extra 25 as well?

You and me both Marshall.

No one knows? OK, anyone know of any outboard forums out there? Do the bass guys talk motors?

Here is another source for bolt-on mods for yamaha motors... Not legal by EPA unless you are doing it for testing purposes or racing purposes, but possible to do if they make parts for it...

http://www.hydrotecmarine.com

Look at their phase kits, or specific bolt-on applications like high performance heads, exhaust tuners, and carbon fiber reeds. Not too hard if you are handy with a wrench...

Thanks guys. Just joined at BBC. I did a search for outboard forums, but didn't think to look for a bass boat forum, and find motors within that.

You dang skippy!!!

I'm tellin ya Jon, I'm a better human being for owning that boat, and God loves me more for it. And that's not to rub it in, but to say thanks for selling me such and awesome rig. She's in good hands. She's out in the heated garage right now, all nestled in for the winter. You've got an open seat anytime you want.

And the answer is.....

Heads and ECU, which would run about $1500 in parts. Heh, is it worth it? I'm thinking that's $1500 in gas and oil I can spend next summer.

Cost-benefit analysis. I think your analysis is good, but that's just me. Definitely a sweet rig.

Thanks Sean. I think that boat may be my soul mate.

And yeah, it'd be cool to just have all kinds of gnarly extra power in that thing, but good greif, 200 is already pretty good, more than most, and it pushes that boat with authority and I've not yet ever thought to myself, "goddangit! I need more power!!" Ususally I'm thinking to myself, "wow, I love having this kind of power!" So I think I'm set with where I'm at. If I could get it done for less than say, $500....eh, maybe I'd do it. But $1500....dang, that's alot of gas, or a new rod and reel, or better yet, just cash in the bank in case I really need it if a GPS craps itself, or God forbid, I blow a head or something....

Through Hydrotec marine

High performance heads $538 (gain of 15 to 20hp)
Carbon Fiber reeds $225 (gain of 8 - 10hp)

These two alone will get you quite a bit of extra power, and with a short time of "wrenching" you would have bolted on probably close to the 25hp you are looking for...

More you could do too if you wish:
megaphone exhaust tuner $229 (gain of 7 - 12hp)
High perf. engine mounts $130
High perf. spacer plate $375 (gain of 8 - 12 hp)

With these non-invasive bolt-o additions, you could be well over the 225 mark and no need for an ECU the two first ones get you close and you are under a grand...

Yeah thanks Steve. HydroTec are the ones I eventually got the answer from. The boys over at BBC sent me to HydroTec, and I saw their performance mods. They're an option for sure, but like I said, the power I have in the motor now is fine by me, so maybe down the road a bit. I was just curious if the upgrade was as simple as a differnent exhaust or some no-brainer add-on. That's pretty common in the world of small two strokes, like chainsaws. You'll have two separate models of saw, or the same model, but different model years, only the only difference is in the muffler or carb, but one with more power than the other. Swap a component and you just gained a hp (which in a saw is huge.)

Heck...the head swap alone gets you close, and it is extremely easy too...

I did my 90hp 2 stroke a couple of years ago...definitely a nice gain...obviously not anywhere near as big of a job since I only had one head and water jacket to do as compared to yours...But...given an hour or so, the swap is done... relatively cheap.

But...as you said, the extra ponies won't do too much at all... 25 hp is only going to give you a gain of maybe 1 - 2 miles per hour...

Cost vs performance gain in this case...weighs heavy on what you decide.

Really? 2 mph? Well heck, I thought it'd be more than that. Hmph, nevermind then. Most of what I'd be paying for then would just be the right to strut a 225 sticker on my cowling around the boat ramp parking lot. Fugidaboudit!

LOL! Would the stickers give me another mph or two?

I can't remember Nick, do you have a Merc or a Yammi? I remember you have a nice friggin boat, but can't place the motor. Just curious

Hiya again,

From the looks of it, I bet there is more to gain in just the set-up of the boat and motor combination alone... And potentiall no money spent at all whatsoever...

Looking at the original pictures of the motor, it seems to be mounted awfully low on the transom for that kind of HP and transom configuration. I cannot tell from the pictures, but does the hull end about 6 inches or so in front of the transom? Either way, with that HP, I would bet that motor can be moved up at least one more hole without any significant loss in handling. That'll give you a little more speed on the top end without sacrificing much if anything at all on the low end.

Another trick (inexpensive too) would be to add a 6 inch set-back or manual jack plate if the boat can handle it. That would get the prop running in cleaner water, and allow you to raise it even higher. What this would also do is make trimming the motor up less of a factor since the bow would be able to rise easier. The boat would also be out of the water more overall... That equals speed...

Just a thought (can you tell I like to "tinker" with stuff like that?)

For sure Steve. Tinkering is fun...I just don't know enough about boats to do it effectively. I'm not racing anyone or even fishing tournements or league. I just want to use this boat in the most efficient manner I can.
