Location: ashtabula ohio | probably a blown seal. 25 hp merc, about 6 yrs old. i change the lower unit twice a year and have had water come out once or twice the last couple years between re-fills... now after draining it for the winter , have noticed leakage at the prop and even a bit around the bolts on top of the unit. motor has run like a champ since i bought it...but had a couple "bog downs" running full throttle this past fall, but the motor never died. is the seal something i can do myself or must i take it to the shop? thanks for any help. |

| I am not handy at all but my friend helped me replace all of the lower unit seals and it was very basic - even for me. I was quoted a ridiculous price to fix it and it only cost me about 40 dollars to do it myself. There will be seals at the prop and the top end of the lower unit. It took us about 3 hours because we worked cautiously and had a few beers too. Getting the old seals out and the lower unit back on was the only slightly tricky part. Get a manual. Mine never leaked again. |

Location: St. Croix River, Mille Lacs, | definately a seal leak OR a missing gaslet on the oil fill/vent plugs. I have re-sealed probably over 200 of these for various reasons. Just watch what you're doing when you take it apart. Take pictures if you have to. Take a look at the prop shaft seals as they are installed face-to-face. as in no water in and no oil out. check/replace your oil fill & vent plug gaskets. Also whatever you do NEVER winter your motors lower unit empty of oil! Alway refill with fresh Mercury lower unit oil.
hope this helps. |
