Is it possible to catch ciscos? I've always wondered if they could be caught. They are interesting fish.

You can.
I've caught a couple fishing for panfish.
They often strike small jigs, but either the hooks are usually too big or
their mouths are too small and it is hard to actually hook them.
Hard to target unless the school is surfacing or in shallow water.
A small sinking fly might work better.

I've nailed them on waxworms while ice fishing. They are almost always suspended in the water column and that is often in the deep basins of the lake.

I've heard of them being caught while ice fishing. They are a oiley fish and are good if smoked.

We catch a lot of them during the winter months here on Vermilion. They will hit crappie or perch sized baits on a regular basis.

Late winter is much better than early ice. They swim in large schools out in the deep basin for the most part. They will suspend up high much of the time. I often find some big Walleyes under them.

They really stink, I always keep them outside in a bucket to keep the smell out of the shack. I use them for dead sticking large Pike under the ice, or in the early spring.

This fall the had a preference for mag walleye dawgs, we caught a couple that actually hit the bait not snagged. I could not believe my partner blew the one twice on a figure 8.

I remember seeing a boat out on a lake just across the Mi Wi border where a boat was jigging in 45' with small spoons and they caught Ciscos in summer.

You're saying that ciscoes were hitting walleye mag dawgs? This I gotta see!

I have caught them on crappie minnows on an area bemidji lake through the ice, they are hard to hook with the minnow, but it seems like if you just put on a waxworm or minnowhead they lose interest. always suspended, and sometimes you can get them to chase the bait so far up you can see them down the hole.
