I know that there is still some open water out there but soon that will be a thing of the past. What goals does anyone have for next year? Personally mine are as follows:

1. Get a boat
2. Teach my daughter how to use a bait caster and get her on to her first Musky
(already started practicing)
3. catch fish on the following lures:
-Bulldawg
-Top raider
- Bucktail
4. Get a picture of myself with a Musky (10 so far and no pics)
5. 1st figure 8 fish (nearly fulfilled this on the 30th of Nov)

What's anyone else shooting for?

Goals for '09:

- That the economy stays afloat, a depression doesn't set in, to continue to provide a roof over our head, food on the table , hopefully still have a job and make that mortgage payment.
- After that...then if I can still fish at least as much as I did this past '08 season (which wasn't much nor often and not nearly as much as I would have liked to have) and be as successful as I was this past '08 season, I'd take that and be extremely happy.
- To continue to fish with my daughter (she's 3)
- To teach my son how to fish (he'll be 2 in March)
- Maybe finally make solid contact and to boat a certain monster I've been chasing on a certain lake in a certain spot for too long now....

-Put my wife on a muskie.
-Newer/bigger rig.
-Convert follows into eaters. I can't believe how many fish I saw this year that wouldn't go.
-Get out of the #*^@ metro.
-Get a pic with some of the big girls I saw/hooked/lost throughout the season.

1. Do more panfishing with my son and daughter.
2. Have my son catch two muskies (he got one this year).
3. Do better catching fish in the fall. I had a great year until October when I spent the last 40 hours on the water without a follow/strike/hit. Brutal.

JRedig,
I'm totally with you on getting out of the metro! I can feel the pull to the sticks. Every single day I wish I lived 200 miles north.

My Goals:
1.) Get out on the lake every other weekend (during the summer)
2.) Take two long musky trips (one Canada, one MN)
3.) Find a new lake that is not infested with other musky hunters or at least has no rude ones.

getting out of the metro! QUOTE]

Not sure you would want to do that, i guess it depends on which metro lakes you are targeting. IMO grass isnt greener up Nort.

1. 50". 50" will come. Fishing where are are quite a few of them, its bound to happen.
2. Fish more than I did this year. That shouldn't be difficult provided I stay employed and can afford to fish next year.
3. Catch one on the other end of a cast instead of at boatside. Serious. Other than one on a sucker, it's been over two years since I caught one that wasn;t looking right at me. Love the figure 8 fish, but variety is nice too.
4. Have fun. It's supposed to be fun, right? Take your fun too seriously and what have you got? Serious fun? Not so much.
5. Get one to eat a Weagle. Not bump it, not swipe at it, not follow it, nip at it, look at it, etc. I just want one to eat it so I can scream like a girl and forget to set the hook.

Goals are good. But to tell the truth, as long as I can fish and come home in one piece it will be a good year.

I have to admit, I laughed pretty hard at that last sentence, only because it sounds like the story of my life with that bait! :D

1. Do some fishing from a boat, shore is fun but the same spot can get old really quick which I learned this year.
2. Catch a fish on the figure 8, only 2 follows this year, one rolled on the bait and of course it shocked me cause fish was literally 2 ft from me and I forgot to set the hook cause I was too busy staring at the fish.
3. Catch a fish on a bucktail, I can't believe this still hasn't happened.
4. Catch more fish the this year (16 all from shore)
5. Take a trip or 2 to a lake I don't normally fish.
6. Have fun and enjoy every minute in the outdoors
7. I want a 50 like everyone else but beating my PB of 47 would do just fine by me.

-Avoid any major house-related projects... Building a new deck this last summer was fun, but it sure wasn't fishing. And putting on the new roof wasn't fun, and DEFINITELY wasn't fishing. If that can be done:

-Get out twice a week, at least. Preferably more.

-Get in a couple weekend trips to some bigger water... Mille Lacs for sure, maybe Vermillion.

-Catch something on a home made crank/twitch/surface bait. You guys with your crazy beautiful 'basement' lures persuaded me to give it a shot myself. We'll see how it goes... I'm working with a scroll saw, a dremel and a bunch of scrap cedar from the deck project, and while the quality isn't anywhere near there yet (this is my first week playing with it) I'm having a heck of a lot of fun. The only thing that will make it even more fun is to see one get inhaled by something toothy. Doesn't have to be big (or even a musky) for me to feel like I accomplished something on that front.

-Try some new water. Seems I (almost) always fish the same lake. It's a good lake, I enjoy it, but it's almost become habit. There are a few I'd like to try next year that I either haven't been on yet or just haven't spent enough time on.

-Net a big one for my fishin' buddy. He's relatively new to the sport and has caught a couple so far, but I'd love for him to connect with something a little scary. I'm pretty sure he'd poop himself.

That's it, really. If even most of the above happens, I'll be happy.

Work on understanding structure better.
Work on boat control and fishing speed.
Fish with my family more than last year...crappie are as fun for a little one as muskies are for us.
Catch a 50+ incher.
Try to make it out of state once a month, even if it is for only a day.
Fish a bigger tournament.
Enjoy life and stay healthy

These are not in order of importance.

I am an older guy in a mid-life crises completing a graduate degree this coming Feb. I will no long have any excuses not to be on the water other than the occasional honey-do list. Goals are as follows
- Double or even triple the amount of time I spend on the water
- Learn to fish in a disciplined manner by being more methodical and by really focusing on my presentation and bait selection based on conditions -- no more lazy fishing.
- Catch a Musky on the following:
-- Top water walk-the-dog
-- Top water prop style bait
-- Large plastic such as a Bulldawg, Curly Sue/Suzy Sucker or SuperD
-- Glide Bait
-- Jerk Bait

I almost hate myself for saying this, but i have to go for 100 fish in the boat next year. I've never been that guy before, but we got 94 this year without really thinking about it, and we definitely could have caught 6 more with a little effort (or sharper hooks!) Still, gotta find 15 more people to get their first 'skis for them next year- though i'm running out of musky-less friends!

I wonder if setting goals you have real control over would be more effective. For example, instead of "catch 20 muskies" you'd say "fish 200 hours". Instead of "catch a fish on a topwater" say "throw topwater for 100 hours". "Fish 10 different lakes" etc., etc. Seems to me that staying focused on goals you have real control over just might help you catch more fish and have more fun than you would otherwise. Just a thought.

interesting thought, guest. I think you have a point, as goals should be attainable through effort, HOWEVER a lot of the fun of musky fishing is because things are out of our control. If we set goals that are all controllable we may catch more fish, but those goals are not very exciting. "Throwing DCGs for 100 hours" is not a goal that i necessarily look forward to, but i will do it in order to catch some muskies. Really, when it comes down to it, the stuff that keeps us on the water is out of our control. Catching muskies, watching sunsets/sunrises, seeing a huge wake follow a weagle, are all ultimately out of our control, but that is why we fish. i suppose setting controllable goals just doesn't do musky fishing justice and doesn't make it any more fun. Just a thought.

I am with Mike's Goal number 1 is to find a Job, and that will probably have the most impact on what next year becomes. 1/2 million lost jobs last month(34 year high) and we still are not at the bottom.

1- Back to Eagle
2-Hopefully getting the son into the boat more often.
3-Fish 4-5 new lakes
4-Down size basment tackle box

Didn't you forget something, like get the boat running!!! Also if your planning to fish 1000 hours then I assume your quitting around August right cause you and I both know we fished over 1000 hours by the time August hit in 2008

More figure 8 fish, learn lake x better. More night fishing, and hopefully some flyfishing! I'd like to find more fishing partners too.
