Sunday will be the day. There are a few of the guys from the board out there today, maybe they will contribute as well. I have a wedding to attend today, and was on the road all week, so tomorrow and Monday I will be out there. I did get out on Shish in Minoqua last week in the evening just to look around. Got 15 crappies, 15 DANDY rock bass, and a big Smallmouth, didn't fish Muskies. SUe cooked as I cleaned....the dinner was GREAT!

Finally got to splash Purple Haze today on Pelican Lake in Oneida County Wisconsin.

Started on the Flats on a north east wind fishing a Slammer 5" in Perch. Saw a good one, about 42 or so. Missed me clean close to the boat, with a dramatic thrash and splash.

I talked to Lance Thiel, who has been out the last two days. He had two this AM early, and saw two more. He had his action on a Burt, including a 32" pike.

I then fished Muskie Bay in it's entirety, and saw nothing but pike. There were some anglers ripping BIG crappies on the outside edge of the weedline, good thing I had no minnows or the trip would have gone south there.

Treacherous Bay was my next stop, 67 degreee water temps on the NE outside edge, so the Undertaker came back out as it was nearly dark. A really good fish (46",maybe a bit better?)took the bait on the very beginning of my third cast, and put up a spectacular fight to the boat. While fooling around trying to get the camera to take an in-the-water photo for the board with an Undertaker hanging out of her yap, she shook her head, changed direction, and came unpinned. Should have put her in the Frabill!! Oh well, she will be there for Beav and I later.

I tossed a few more casts, then changed over to a Snodlow. No takers, so I came in to an empty landing, drove home and had a VERY good venison steak tonight!!

Fished Pelican Wednesday night. Water temps have retreated back into the lower 60's, 64 was as warm as I saw. Fish were moving but couldn't get any to eat. Moved seven fish from 4:00pm until 9:00pm. Fish were moving on Jerkos, Phantoms, and Suicks. Weed growth is really taking off, all kinds of fresh greens out there now.

Fished Pelican last Friday. Water temps are back up to 67 - 68 degrees. The algae bloom is also very much in full swing. Saw fish, but not very active ones. They would follow slow, and disappear. The weeds are doing very well, and so are the pike. I couldn't seem to keep the northern off the hook.

Was on Pelican Tuesday night, water temps in the mid to upper sixties (65-68). Weeds have really taken off, some places they are near the top of the water. Fished in a 20+mph east wind, my favorite, saw three fish.

Norm,
You try the North shore? Any weeds there yet? Going to be out there this weekend, may see you there if you are out on the dead sea.

Steve, don't know if you made it out this weekend, but I was on the water last night(Mon.). I am finding weeds in areas that have not had them in a few years, some of my old haunts are finally coming back[] .

Water temps monday cracked the 70 degree mark, fish were moving decently. Had hooks in two but couldn't keep em attached, moved 7 fish altogether in 5.5 hours of fishing, nothing huge, but a couple were in the mid forties. All the fish were going on topwater, boy I hate that[;)] . Jackpot was hot during the afternoon and then a Super Top Raider during the last couple hours of the day. Things are starting to roll right now the next week or so should be awesome.

Sue and I had the same success, except she stuck a 30" tiger. I had a very good fish hit a Jackpot, looking forward to Friday with Beav!!

I was on Pelican this past weekend and on Sunday I lost a 40"plus and managed to get a 43" on a Jackpot. My Dad got a nice 18" smallmouth on a Cisco Kid Topper, caught a couple of northerns, and had a couple more sizable fish come up on topwater baits. Earlier this year my friend got a 35" tiger and I heard of another 32" tiger(plus Sue's 30"). Did Pelican get stocked with hybrids or are they occurring naturally?

Clark, I'm not 100 percent certain but I think the vast majority of Pelican lake Tigers are occurring naturally. I have a Bro-in-law that is in the fisheries dept for this area so I will get you a certain answer soon.

There is a ridiculously high number of Pike in the lake (if you don't believe me try to get a jig and a minnow through them on the weedlines when fishing for walleye) and I feel fairly confident that the lake is a classic for naturally occurring Tigers. I have caught a few off of it usually one every other year, none over 40" yet though.

Jason:

Your not missing much, why else would the locals named it the "Dead Sea". Heck, I think that this Steve Worrall guy taugh walleyes classes in rhinelander. I'll try to avoid the lake the Memorial tourney.

Good luck

PLEASE keep thinking that...

We saw 4 over 40 yesterday, and two in the mid to upper 30's. Couldn't get them to eat, mostly as a result of bad aim on the part of the fish.

Keith got one and lost three the night before on surface baits. Most of my action was on Undertakers, and Beav's was Undertakers and Beavertails.

Next time....

The Kevin Worrall Memorial Tournament is only one day, and pretty easy to avoid as a result!!

What's happenning on Pelly. I've been out of the country ( Pike trip in northern Sask.) for the last week and a half. What is the water temp and weed conditions? Have the fish moved off their topwater bite yet? Have they moved hard to the rocks? Need to get back in the swing and could use a helper.

I'm taking the family up to Pelican for the weekend. Haven't been up for over a month. Anybody got any reports or advise? Gotta let the boy catch one, he hasn't caught a legal in a couple of years. He has lots of activity, just no luck.

Thanks and good luck this weekend.

I think that you will be in for a treat as the lake is starting to turn on. The fish the last week have started relating closer to structure, and some of the big gals are showing up, lot of movement of 40+ inch fish. I prefer to fish rock structure this time of year but just got a report from a buddy of two near fifties one in the boat one lost next to it coming off cabbage ( same spot nonetheless). As an added bonus the walleye are going right now too, should be a good trip.

Didn't get to fish as much as we would have liked[:((], but that's what happens when you go on a family vacation. Fri. nite was good for us as we both connected. Mine was 38 1/8 and the boy finally put another one in the net 44 1/2[] his biggest so far. Boy his cheeks still hurt from all the grinnin' he was doing. Now all I here about is that his bigger than mine. Both fish came on crankbaits on the rocks. Fished Sat. morning in the weeds and only saw one about 40. Spent the rest of the weekend doing the family thing and watching the Packers[:((]. Can't wait to get back up.

Any new info on the lake....water temp, clarity, weed color?? I haven't been on the lake since Memorial Day due to the duties of a new house and marriage.

I am trying to decide whether to take the boat or bow??

The weeds on Pelican are still fairly green and good shape...That may be changing pretty soon with the onslaught of dropping temperatures and turnover. The water clarity was pretty good on the lake. A group of guys that was fishing in the Hodag had moved a good share of fish on hair in the weed flats. We had moved some fish on the rocks with jerkbaits. Some nice fish were caught last weekend during the Hodag tournament. Water temps were in the low 60's and turnover is just around the corner.

good luck,
Krappie

9-28-2002

Water temps ranged from 54 - 57 degrees, with some green cabbage found in the bays. Moved a few fish in the weeds, and a few on the rocks. One fish in the boat (39" picture attached) on Saturday, and was stuck in the hospital Sunday [:blackeye:] to treat my concussion and sew up my head (too bad I don't always look before I stand up).
