| What is happing up in that neck of the woods? |
|
| |
|
| My Dad got a 33" on High last weekend and we saw a lot of fish. Didn't see much on anything but Crankbaits. Baby Shallow Raiders in the prism color seemed to be the ticket. Had around 10 follows each day but nothing too big. Biggest seen was around a 40" so nothing to exciting. Water temps were very cold in the low 50s but once the lake starts heating up the fish will too!(Hopefully)! |

|
| That was for opening day weekend. |
|
| |
|
| We were up there last weekend (May 31 - June 2). Weeds are beginning to sprout. By this weekend, the lakes will have some nice weeds. Water temps on the clear lakes were 61 - 66. Dark lakes were about 70.
All of the fish are in the weeds. Nothing is on rocks or suspended. Some fish were still partnered up on the clear lakes. We had action on clear lakes, but only small fish.
They are done spawning on the dark lakes, but they aren't recovered yet. The males are still really beat up, but very active. Here is a picture of a 39.5 that was pretty scared up.
Hope this helps,
Scott |

| Setme31, are you planning on going up again in the near future? If so when and what lakes will you be fishing? I'm going up on the 9th or Thursday this month.
Thanks, |

|
| Sorry Brett, I won't be up there again until the end of July. In fact, I won't be muskie fishing again until the end of the July. I'm getting married on June 29, and then I have the honeymoon. So no muskies for me. If you want to know what lakes we fished, send me an e-mail. [email protected] |

| Brett,
I'll be up on Fishtrap/High Mon. thru Fri. next week. How long you staying up there? Plan on hitting a few other lakes as well............ |

| Just got back from 5 days up by BJ.First 3 1/2 days were poor.Only 3 follows.Thursday night fished an old favorite that I rarely fish anymore.Post spawn fish, first main lake point out of a spawning bay.Can be a pretty good spot.Got there about 7pm.2 fish ,a 33 and 36 incher off the point by 9pm.Good way to break out of a seemingly endless slump.Friday
I wasted my time on another lake and went back about 5pm.Fished other spots with not even a follow.Went back to the point at 7 again.Had a nice fish on and got off on a MuskyKiller.Had him hooked pretty good.Put on a favorite Bucher Babytail and he slammed it again.40 incher in the boat at 7:15.Worked around the point and put the Mepps back on .Hand a follow at about 8:35,went back to the Babytail and he slammed it .A 38 incher at 8:40 .2 casts later a 35 incher slammed the Babytail. 5 fish off the same spot in about 4 hours of fishing. It sure is nice when everything works like just like its supposed to.Be nice if it could happen a little more often |

| Any reports?[] |

| Was up on Tenderfoot last Saturday and cooked in the morning sun. Ontonogan River was about 6 inches low, forcing you to run the river at idle speed with the motor trimmed up... and I still hit 3 times (I swear my new boat is jinxed).
Only raised 2 fish in 3 hours of casting. Both fish were after spinnerbaits. The one strike came when GRINDING through the junk. I really thought I'd get that fish to go as it stayed hot on the figure 8.... but it just wasn't meant to be. Both fish were teenagers in the mid 30 inch range. So much for getting my Father-In-Law a ski this year. |

| Will be heading to fishtrap and high lake in a week and a half. Will post up when I return. I hope the bloom is not bad and the temps are decent. |

|
| I was fishing in that area last Thursday and half of Friday (7/25-26). My friend and I had a total of six strikes and one large walleye. Mid-morning on Thursday, I stuck an upper 40" class fish. I thought I had her hooked well but after battling the musky to the boat it decided to leap, which sent the fish one way and my lure the other. Thursday finished with a couple more strikes and one large walleye. On Friday morning I caught a 40"er and missed one other. My friend had a 45" class fish unexpectantly grab the head of his crankbait at the boatside and he missed the fish. |

| There's no such thing as an upper 40" class fish in Wisconsin. You know what, is there any 40" fish anymore?[:((] |
|
| |
|
| Jim,
I hope that is not your true view of northern Wisconsin's fishery. There are many large muskies and walleyes around. The problem, as I see it, is that most are highly educated. To catch them consistently, you have to go against the grain. As one example of their existence, in 1998 I caught 40 Wisconsin legals, with 14 fish between 44-51". [;)] |

|
| Mike T,
1998 was 4 years ago, and the fishing has since declined in my opinion. I get the feeling you live in Wisconsin and fish quite often, which makes me very jealous as I reside in the hellhole state to your south.
If you do the numbers, with 27 weeks in the 1998 muskie season, 14 fish between 44"-51" isn't that great, especially if you fish often. That's 1 fish between 44"-51" every 2 weeks. BLAH. There are lakes in Indiana and Illinois that are putting up better numbers than Wisconsin now. Unfortunately, the scenery isn't as nice down here.
Do you find the farther west you go, the better the fishing? |
|
| |
|
| Yeah, I hope to live long enough to become jaded about "only" 14 fish larger than 44" per season.
I'm down here in the Buckeye where many still consider jug-fishing & limb-lining great sport. Would trade all our water for those tired numbers lakes of Vilas Co. Saw (3)4-footers, one of which swam away w/my bait, in 90 minutes & thought I might wet my pants....
Still good fish to be had, even if I'm not having 'em. |

| Jim,
I mentioned 1998 because it was the year preceeding the birth of child #2, and most recently this spring, child #3. Since that time, my fishing hours have been reduced (which is ok because the family is more important). Throughout the 90's however, I typically caught between 20-40 legals per year, with an average fish length of 40-41". Hours fished per year topped out at around 150. While the numbers of fish caught have gone down the past couple of years, the average length and hours/fish has been about the same.
In 1998, I fished a total of 137 hours over 16 calender dates. So the average hours per fish was actually quite low (3-4 hrs/fish or 150-200 casts/fish). This was between opening weekend and the 2nd week of August. I did not fish in the Fall once...I shot too many ducks.
I don't fish western WI at all, primarily north central, some NE. I was fortunate to grow up on Big Arbor Vitae Lake (which taints me to the north central portion of the state) and now reside in central WI. As of late, my fishing trips are typically "quickies". I may drive up for a morning (5 hours of fishing, 3-4 hours driving) and then come back home. If the weather conditions, etc. are right you can still boat several fish in that time period. I can't wait until the kids can cast a lure (ages 5 - girl, 3 - boy, and 4 months - girl) and demand to go fishing!

| Mike T,
I have fished Big Arb many times, and actually fished there 2 weekends ago. Got some unbelievable bald eagle pictures. We have had our share of luck, as we have boated 3 fish a day, but no trophies. Seen em, but haven't got them to bite. We fish Bone in the fall and do very well, catching fish up to 47" this past year while putting 5-6 fish in the boat a day in the past. Higher limits out west allow the fish to grow.
Good Luck,
Jim |

|
| Jim,
It is a small world. I was also on Big Arbor Vitae two weekends ago. I fished there for a few hours on Saturday morning, July 20th with a friend. We had 4 strikes and caught one in a 50 minute period from 8:30 a.m. to 9:20 a.m. I would concur that the Bald Eagle activity was great with up to 7 in the air at one time.
What kind of boat do you fish from? By your name "Commanche", I would guess a Ranger. I saw a white Ranger and a red Ranger out that morning. |

| Mike,
That was us on Arbor Vitae. I was in the red 519 and my cousin in the white fisherman. We didn't see anything that day, but then again, we got out there a little late and left early. Fished center bar and the weeds off the beach. Here's a picture of the eagle that swooped down in front of us and picked up a crappie.
I've been trying to attach the picture, but it's not posting. Can anybody give me some advise? |

|
| Jim,
If your going to be up that way yet this year let me know. If I'm around, I could swing by and show you where/how we've been taking some of the larger fish. Good luck the rest of the season.
P.S. I was in the black Lund about 400 yards from you. |

| Just got back from boulder junction and raised 35 fish and boated 4. Was our week to lose fish. Temps were 72 down to 68 when we left. Fish wanted it fast and erratic. Was no algae bloom this year like last year. |

|
| Fished up there labor day weekend. We raised 25 fish and boated 4 small fish and one nice pike. Lost quite a few and one nice fish broke my zalt![:(] |

| New to this site, But I think I can help on the fishing report in the north woods. I have a place on Little Arbor Vitae,By 7:00pm every friday, for the past 7yrs. you can find me fishing for the elusive musky.Last weekend very hot weather(9-6), the fish still suspended,BUT night bite is pretty good. Work deep weed edges, and watch your solar tables.2_fish on top water, the first was about 24# and the second about 20# both after dark.(High Lake).some lakes already into algae bloom.NO lakes are ready to turn over yet that I've seen.Hopefully,a couple weeks, the mighty esox will be ready to eat.
P.S. If you want to talk musky, you can find me usually on High Lake,Most of the time I am the only boat out there after dark,Musky fishing. |
