Who's using a GPS in their vehicle, and which one would you recommend?
I'd like to get one that I can take out of the box, plug in the cigarette lighter and drive away. Something that is easy to see, and maybe even talks, but isn't going to cost more than any of my fishing electronics. That just seems wrong.
Thanks ahead of time.

ive had a tom tom one xl for going on a year now and it hasnt steered me wrong yet. the only time i had issues with it was when i was up in ontario on hwy 502. (in and out signal trouble) otherwise it has been flawless. from canada to florida and alot of places in between it has been great.

I've got the second to last unit on the bottom of this link. I've used the last model on the bottom of the page also. Put thousands of miles on using my GPS and absolutely love it.

I have the Lowrance iWay600 because I wnated the biggest screen I could find. I have had it for a year now and am very happy with it. One thing I like about it is that it has built in lake maps also so when I drive out ice fishing I can drive right to the break lines etc.

I have also heard good things about the Lowrance XOG which I am curious about getting also because it can be used in a car, boat, or even in your pocket.

Beav,
If you can wait a few weeks, there's going to be some huge deals on the car GPS's on black friday.

funamentally all of the gps units on the market are the same in funtion. some units cost more then others because of size of screen and bells and whistles such as detour information or MP3 capacity.

My wife now has the base unit TomTom and it has never failed.

I have the Lowance XOG and really like it. I can use it in the car (comes with a windshield / dashboard mount), and I can also take it out on the boat. It can accpet the mapping chips. I took it to vermilion this past summer and used it out of the boat I rented - worth its weight in gold to avoid all the mid-lake reefs when out fishing after dark. Unit is now selling for around $159 on sale at most retail stores.

I have one of these and for the money this is the best unit around.
I would recommend getting the bag for the dash, this way you don’t have to use the suction cups. Another advantage of the bag is that it makes it easier to remove the whole thing from the car and as I mention no screwing about with the suction cups. Just on a side note it is illegal to use electronic devices stuck to the windshield in California and Minnesota.

I have a Garmin NUVI 750, really nice the Voice directions a clear and easily understood, It has a color wide screen & the Maps are spot on.
A little pricey but a really nice unit, with Circuit City closing many stores you may find some really good deals

You guys are actually going to pay good money to hear a cranky broad tell you how to drive? Why not just get married?

EA, I don't know what your situation is, but getting married will cost you alot more good money than a nav-device!!! And you can also turn them off when you don't need help.

And I can punch the GPS and throw it out of a moving vehicle if it gets on my nerves.
Thanks for the advice guys and gals. Lots of nice units for not so much money as I thought.
Beav

Well, since I have lots of experience with Garmin, and never had a problem with any of their products, I decided to go with a nuvi 250W - widescreen. Whom ever mentioned looking for sales, you don't have to wait until next Friday. It took some looking around, but I found a mess of them for about $175, on units that were retailing for $225-$250 not too long ago. I have a feeling that no matter what you get, it will be obsolete by this time next year. One guy even told me that I could buy accessories for my GPS MAP 162 and take it out of my boat and put it in my vehicle. But I think that I would have to buy some mapping programs to go with it, and the sheer size might make it a little tough on the dash. Besides, I want somebody to talk to.
