I caught a PB fish this past summer. I measured it at 48x21. This was the first fish I ever girthed. Some people told me it looked like it had a bigger girth than 21 inches. I'm no expert on this.

I measured the girth in the water with the fish in the net with a flexible sewing tape. I pulled the tape until it was just snug. Not loose on the fish, but not pulled tight either. I was pretty pumped up, and wanted to get the fish back in a hurry, so I might not have been around the thickest part of the fish, etc. OR, it may very well be 21 inches!

I heard that for using the weight calculators, the girth should be measuerd out of the water with the fish laying on a bump board. I have also heard people say this only inflates the true girth of the fish?

Is there a TRUE way to accurately measure girth for reporting and weight calculator purposes?

I attached a picture of the fish again. If anybody wants to commend on how close it looks to a 21" girth feel free, but this post wasn't meant to argue about this particular fish, it was to learn how to girth fish in the future. Two pictures at 2 different angles. For perspective I'm about 5'9" and 165 pounds.

Thanks,

curleytail

The weight calculators are 'sort of' accurate, and getting it exact isn't the idea, it's just an estimate of sorts. Girth measurement is not an exact practice, and in the heat of the release even less so, IMHO. If weight is important, get a certified scale onboard, and weigh the fish in the net, then deduct the weight of the net itself.

It looks like a 21" girth, and you measured it a 21" girth, so it must be a 21" girth. The girth should not matter whether it is measured in the water or layed down, it is better for the fish to do it while it's in the water.
