Location: Madison WI | Well the season is coming to a close for most of us within the next month or so and I was just wondering what everyone's most productive bait was for them this season. Mine was the 8 inch Bucher Swimming joe (sucker and perch pattern) this bait accounted for 8 of the 16 muskies I have caught so far this year. What has everyone else had good numbers on?
Another year almost over and still I have yet to catch a muskie on any kind of bucktail. My second most productive lure was the 4 inch 1 1/2 oz rattle trap in which I caught 3 including my PB.

| The most productive baits for me in 2008 have been:
#1) Musky Innovations - Shallow Invader - Bumblebee and Walleye patterns
#2) Original Mantas - Pumpkin Perch and Crappie patterns - have not even seen a fish on the hang 10 mantas I throw
#3) Hellhound - ERC - Any color - almost always at least see fish when working the hellhound. My fav - Holo Bluegill
#4) Bucher Jointed Baby Depthraider - Any color - most productive bait in the past 5 years - The one miller perch DR I have has accounted for 11 muskies since 2005 when I started my log. Almost no paint left on it.
What has not been working for me this year:
Not one fish on a bulldawg this year, actually I did have a couple 30" range muskies in the spring on the 6" dawgs but overall disappointing.

| Fished the Kawarthas in Ontario during September. I caught 12 Muskies on one of John Snow's Crankbaits. That was my hottest bait for the year, all fish came in the propwash with 17 to 36' of line.

Spent a lot of time trolling through the year with not a single musky caught. My tactics next season will be different. |

| It's probably a dead even tie for me.
The first half of the season goes to the Dunwright Top Dancer (in the perch pattern). That thing is amazing and produced fish when nothing else would do it.
The later part of the season is easily attributed to a topwater, saltwater lure made by Lu Nemanius. He usually makes awesome gliders but his walk the dog, surface, striper lure is the best I've ever used.

Windel's Harasser is good bucktail for me!
Would try Hellbound, bulldawg and several other in 2009! |

Bulldawgs, Hellhounds, and Phantoms with tails all were also producers.

Location: So. Illinois | A black and orange Northland muskie spinnerbait. I had this lure on one of my rods all year long, it would call up fish when nothing else worked. It now has very little hair left on it and it continues to catch fish -- no explaination to why this bait has worked so well. |

I often think that some lures send certain vibrations or something whereas, brand new baits of the same make or model do not work as well. Any comments? |

Location: Maple Grove, MN | The best of lures for me were, as usual, CJs Spinner baits. It was the second straight year where my boat averaged better than one Muskie per four hours of fishing. (Up from our historic average of one Muskie per six hours.) Sometimes the fish preferred the small tandem skirted CJs, sometimes it was the large Willows hair baits, and sometimes it was the single bladed hait baits. But it was a rare outing we didn't put fish in the boat with one or more CJs.
It seems that the more people we saw throwing the big baits, the better those CJs worked. It sure was fun having guys come over to see the fish we were releasing and couldn't believe what we were throwing.
You don't need big lures. You don't need cool or fancy lures. You just need a good lure in the right place at the right time to catch a nice Muskie. |

| There is more than one lure out there? My number one choice this year is by far the bulldawg. It has landed over 70 muskies in my boat this year with the largest being a huge 52.25. The pounder in particular has been hot as always. The new additions to the dawgs both this year and especially the ones that are going to be hitting the market next year such as a harder more durable plastic mixture, US heavy duty split rings and custom made extra sharp hooks. In addition to this they have shifted the nose weight back to it wont pull out. Basically a great lure just got better, so muskies look out. |

I just checked the log and found 42 muskies this year on these two lures. The killer eel made a strong showing later in the season as well. |

| The pounder has been my number one bait this year in both follows, figure eight fish, and fish landed. The legend outcast is still holding onto the second spot as my best trolling lure and the huddleston swimbait coming in third but particularly well during the late and early coldwater periods around iceup and out. |

Location: Muskegon Michigan | I cant speak for 2008 because we were rebuilding a house So ill just go with all time for us.
#1 Lokes cranks (7 inch)
#2 Talonz Little Claws
#3 Talonz Slashers
#4 SHumway Flashers ( double #8 blades)
#5 Nils Master Invincibles 10 inch models
#6 Tuff Shads
#7 Mordas Minnows
#8 Crane 205
#9 Cady Weagle
#10 Hoosier 9 inch Gliders
I went by the number of fish caught on each lure type. We used Lokes for many years before I built the Slashers. I have over 400 fish on Lokes but in just two years we have close to 200 on Slashers including our biggest fish a 52 incher from Lake St. Clair.
The best lure is what gets it done in the situation you are in. We do it all, cast ,troll, live bait. Every one of those 10 I mentioned are top of the line in my boat. I have almost zero plastic lures in my boat. I have owned them all and used them all. These are the most productive baits I have used in 12 years of Musky fishing.
There are several others that I give some serious credit to like Grandma lures 13 inch model. I have two muskies caught on them one over 30 pounds. I own four of them. They are the only plastic baits I own.
My own Rippin Shads in 4,5 and the new 7.5 inch models.
Hudson Hoginators ,very nice baits,
BK Chubbies , I am just starting to use these and have high hopes.
My own Dragon Claws and Deepthreats, Many others are doing real well with them. My Michigan fish are just getting big enough to use them myself.
Cow Girls, cant argue with the numbers but my elbow wont take the strain

| DCG's, Jr. DCG, and double showgirls. The tails did awsome for us this year... 3 years ago I hated them and was a glidebait fanatic, this year and last I didn't use any gliders past June. Tails RULE!
I also did well on Hawg Wobblers early in the season, times were tough and those along with 8" T. Tubes help put some early fish in the boat... talk about a slow way to fish though! |

Location: Lake Tomahawk, WI | Was able to spend time in the boat in a variety of areas this past summer. The best baits I saw were:
Bulldawgs, Mags and Pounders. Just wait 'til they start being used in tournaments, lookout!!!
Dunwright Reelfish. Great action, definitely have a place.
Cowgirls, they work in WI too!
Legend Perchbait, one of my favs for rowing, scored again this year.
Slammer 6" minnow baits, great when the fish are shallow and need a little more of a trigger. Great twitched.
Tanner Wildes' new spinnerbait looked awesome and caught some real nice fish this summer.
Also, the new Musky Innovations tube/reaper. We tested these this summer and did great on them. Worked great when nothing else did.
