hello all,

I know alot of people on here have alot more knowledge than myself in musky fishing. So i was wondering what would be the best reel used for twitch baits???I have an already broke a diawa luna,i also have a shimano calcutta te.Id hate to be throwing out 400 bucks each year for a reel like the te.Im just looking for your comments on the toughest reel out there for the price.I dont mind spending the money as long as im gonna get it back in quality.
Thankyou for your time,
Tim J

Get something with an instant anti-reverse. If I am working with long pulls, I like a Abu garcia C4 as it picks up line faster, if I am working short taps with long pauses, a C3 works fine for me. I twitch up to 10" Jakes and Grandmas with no problem. For twitching, I don't think the mechanics are as important as if you were throwing big double bladed bucktails. My experience is limited so I am sure there is better advise out there.

I like having something with a good gear ratio and decent line pickup. It's easy to slow down, but depending on those two criteria, you can only go so fast. I tend to twitch on the side of faster than slower.

I love my St. Croix Avid 300. My favorite reel I own. Great for everything.

I like my Abu Garcia 6500C3 and use for a long time! (Over 25 years) Twitches, pull, jerk, burn (reel fast bucktail), trolling, and anything work good for me! Around 90 dollars...not too bad for a great reel!
Key for good twiiches, pull and jerk is right rod! I like at least 7 ft rod with med-fast to fast action with heavy power rod!

For the money the 6500C3, I use it for most every smaller/mid size bait and a 400TE for bigger Blades and Dawgs ect. All you need.

If you're going to be ripping baits, you'll be needing new anti-reverse bearings every now and then. Take the cost of bearing replacement into consideration because it can add up on high end reels quickly. No anti-reverse bearing is bulletproof, just something we have to accept. Muskie fishing is hard on reels.

Not sure if this is the best reel for twitching, but the Trinidad is the most solid reel I have thrown. It's made for big saltwater fish so it has the mechanics to handle muskies and big hard pulling baits. Only problem is that there isn't a line guide so if you are using baits that create any slack during the retrieve (glide baits for example), the line will bunch up. An alternative that is new to the market and some people have been touting is the Daiwa Saltist... like the Trinidad but cheaper and has a line guide. Never used it but sounds good. I have had many troubles with the new Abu Garcias including the 7000... they burn up with any big baits.

I've been using 7000 Abu Big Game and have been pleased with its durability. Much more robust AR mechanism which does not solely depend on bearings to do the job.

Went through 3 AR bearings this year on my Abu Record.
