I'm looking at buying a couple of trolling reels. I don't troll alot but want solid set-ups when the situations present themselves. I will only be trolling for muskie and the lakes I troll don't have rock structure or much timber(mostly weeds). The reels I'm looking at are the Okuma Convector, Okuma Magda, and the Diawa Accudepth. I believe the smaller size reels(15,20,27) will hold enough braided line since most of my lines will be under 100'. I'm more concerned with drag, frame strength, durability with the smaller size. I'm also planning on running the Shimano TDR rods, and I have scotty rod holders. Any advice is appreciated.

All of the names you mentioned are good quality reels. This year I purchased a number of Cabela's Depth Master rods/ reels and I strongly recommend them. They are very solid reels that come with/ without line counters.

Because they carry the Cabela's brand name, they are exchanged easily thru Cabelas should you encounter any problems. They are several different reel sizes, but for musky/ salmon I'd recommend either the 25 or 30's.

I bought these primarily for steelhead and salmon fishing Lake Michigan and have found them to also double for musky set ups as well.

Depth master also comes with a line up of rods, there is a Dipsy diver rod that comes as a 2 piece rod 9' long that works well for a musky set up. There is a discount if purchased as a combo.

I run Okuma Convectors CV20D's. These seem plenty large. Nice enough reels for trolling, plenty of line capacity, and good drags and clickers.

Thanks for the replies. Cabela's had the Depth Masters in the bargain cave but only had the 15's which started my search. My buddy has the Okuma Catalina's but they are a little more then I have to spend. I believe they are the 25 size. I think the convectors in the 20 size might be the route I take. Just hoping for a few more responses.

Get the convector 20's, you can't go wrong. I run both the convectors and magda's. Both are great reels, but if you some extra coin defiantly get the convectors.

Okuma Magda carries a slightly cheaper price tag, but they are solid reels. I have the 20 size. A bass friend of ours was throwing a jig in deep water one day when he pulled up a Shimano TDR 8'H/Daiwa Accudepth combo that works great. I think the size of the reel was 27. We also have two Daiwa Great Lakes trolling reels which are gigantic (I believe the largest size).

If I were you I'd look at getting the next smallest size from the largest offered. There will probably be plenty of line capacity for your needs.

If you're not running boards, the 20, or 30 size Okuma Magda's can't be beat for the $. I have run mine for over 4 years now, zero maintenance and zero problems. They also work well for suckers.

I prefer the larger size reels because of the lower gear ratio. If I have more than one person in the boat I don't want to stop or slow down to change baits or clear weeds. Cranking in a lure while going 4-5 mph is much easier with the larger reel and lower gear ratio, especially if we're talking a 13" Grandma or 14" Jake.
