| all i can say is what a fantastic experience for larry lorenz and dave wineburner.
a 55" musky is the fish of 10,000 lifetimes.
the very best part is that fish was released successfully and very quickly. thats what this is all about in my opinion. all the clubs who worked so hard on their own and with the wisconsin musky alliance to get those fish in green bay i can guarentee would be proud of larry and dave.
for those of you who dont know, later on sat. larry and dave also found a near dead 40" class fish on the surface. they stopped fishing and went in to try to revive. thats what i call sportsmanship and the ultimate fishermen who care for the resource very passionately.
unfortunately that fish didn't make it.
a short list of results(hope i don't forget anyone.)
larry lorenz-55" beauty in Dave Wineburners boat sat. 11-1-08
Howie Marcotte 38" in Ron Winski's Boat
David Lazzeroni 37" fishing in Dan Lazzeroni's boat
Dave Wineburner 36" fishing in his own boat
I'm still absolutely flabergasted at how big this fish is.
way to goo fella's and all who participated.we only had 12 fisherman but all 12 had an absolute blast.
im sure a few of us will make it down there whenever possible......

Location: Dixon, IL | Wow! Big fish......55".....over 40 lbs easily!
Wisconsin and Michigan doing very well on Great Lakes Muskellunge programs and most stocked into Green Bay area while Michigan get 10% of muskies. Look like 50 lbs or over anytime in the Green Bay area! |

| Congrats to both anglers.
I often wondered, does the guy who didn't reel the fish in share in the catch?
I know if it happened on my boat, I'd want an 8x10 of both of us holding that pig to remember the awesome moment that they must have shared. |

Location: Carney, Mi (in da UP eh!) | Larry's wife Lynette already had a collection of pictures of the release put together by our club get together on Sunday one of the pictures is of Larry and Dave Wineburner(owner of the boat) I think it was pretty much considered a catch by both
BTW...before the naysayers jump aboard...the fish was not held out of the water for numerous pics..it was picked out of the water..a couple of quick pics taken and she was immediately released...in fact Larry even said he couldn't wait for the pictures to see what the fish really looked like..as soon as it was put back in the water it gave them a strong tail splash and away she went...hopefully for me to catch the next time...

| That's why I heard there was a waiting line to launch Saturday morning! I launched at Fox Point, but in talking to a couple buddy's, they mentioned all the boats at the launch. Nice weather for the outing.
Congrat's on the pig to Larry! Good to see there is at least one left out there.
I do have one question. Did you require a permit from the DNR? How many boats were there? How many fish were caught? Any tagged?
ALso kudo's on the effort to revive that 40.

|
|
| this is an outing, not a tournament.
no permit is needed for an outing with a small number.
we had 5 boats out there from the BWMC, with 12 fisherman.
very little pressure added by our club.
also a side note.
not very busy sat. nor sunday in my opinion.as oppsed to other days recently.

Location: north central wisconsin | Was nearby when the fish was caught. Dannyboy called my partner(vanertski) shortly after and we were pumped for them!!! My friend that was attending the Alliance meeting also called shortly after, as he had also gotten the quickly traveled word. Tough day overall for most, but a few big fish caught. If I am not mistaken that fish was caught close to moon rise, as were a few others.
Also, as a side note, Saturday was far less busy than the saturday before, when an outing from Winnebego area was said to be taking place out there. Not many 'non' outing weekends out there in the fall anymore it appears, and we'll all have to get used to it and tighten up our spreads a tad...
Congratulations to the lucky angler, you uncovered a rare gem.

Location: Madison WI | That is an amazing fish that was caught, now I know that you stated it wasn't out of the water very long which is definetly a good thing but did you happen to get a girth on that fish by any chance? Just wondering if ya did, if ya didn't its no big deal as 55 inches of muskie is always a good thing! |

Location: Carney, Mi (in da UP eh!) | In the concern to get the fish back in the water and they way it took off as soon as it was put back in the water no girth was taken...hindsight is 20/20 it would have been nice to have a girth measurement |

| outings are held throughout the state every day and weekend.
i believe its a great way for clubs to get together.
and as i led to earlier if it were not for the so many clubs involved in this sport and especially the ones who supported the stocking of spotted ski's in green bay, we wouldn't be looking at larry's picture.
as far as girth, if it takes longer to girth it or risks the fishes life? not so sure its important. i guarentee the only thing on dave and larry's mind was release asap and a quick picture or 2. the outing rules had to have an item in it for the club verification.
we might have to revisit this issue at future meetings.
i also sat and thought for a while after the phone calls and then going in by my 2 friends to look at camera.
"where the heck is my girth measure tape?" its my 3 daughters favorite toy. pull it out, push the button, laugh on and on and on and on. they never seem to get sick of it.
and then it disappears for a while.......................funny...............!!!!!!!!!!!!!
so i would not have had a girth measurement either...........
i better find that tape soon eh????????????
i hope....

| Hey it was a great time and yes I think with a fish like that I consider myself part of the catch. We just need to keep it going and continue the catch and release plan to allow fish like this to be around. Hey anyone want to go swimming!!!!!!!!!
We estimated the girth based off of the picture and taking measurements from Larry but don't know how accurate it is and then plugged it into the formula for weight it came out to 53lbs so I would say possible upper 40's in weight without an accurate measurement but I know Larry had trouble lifting it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ha ha ha

| did u all check out the new ky state record this past weeked. It's all about catch an release and this record proves it. Being from Ky (with just a 30" limit) I just can't imagine the # of fish we would have in this caliber of fish if we had a real size limit. Just a hope and a few more petitions away from what I hope will be a real size limit, like 48" or so for our state. |
|
|
|
| very good point.
this fish proves again that many of us want a 54" size limit.or better yet a catch and release only like lac seul.many of us have put forth a significant effort on this as well.
we sat and listened to the dnr saying they wouldnt reach 54"
dave, larry, the dempsey fish and some other known fish have proved this wrong.

| Just a correction for ILmuskie...........Michigan does not have a "spotted muskellunge program"........YET! It relies completely on natural repro. in all of the populations of spotties within the state. We could do better, and learn from all those involved in the Green Bay Restoration project since its inception in 1989. They have shown the way (MDNR take note!!!!). In coming years, as the stockings spread out into the other basins connected to the Great Lakes, the pressure on the Fox should begin to decline as fish and fisherman spread out. BTW Nice fish!!!!!! I'm one of the silent, silent members of the BWC. Congrats to the lucky angler! |

| I'm all for catch and release but at this point I think effort should be put towards educating new anglers. Maybe 1 or 2 of these huge fish are going to get caught every year. The vast majority of musky casualties come from inexperienced anglers handing muskies. I think there should be a new level of awarness towards how long you have a fish out of the water. I fish should not be out for more than 10 seconds in my opinion. Unhook the fish in the net in the water. |

Location: Carney, Mi (in da UP eh!) | Trolling, Larry was definately more concerned over the welfare of the fish than he was on taking pictures or measurements, got to give him the upmost credit for that...I think his nerves were still shaking when I first had a chance to see him and that was 7:00pm that evening...celebratory beverages seemed to help some... |

| education is the key.
no one is born knowing how to release a musky.
however release demos , seminars etc...and discussions here can help when kept in line.yellinbg at someone will not help.
we had a BWC release demo in march in iron mtn. mich.
not many in attendance but i watched an inspiring demonstration.
it was so good we had it again at dinner for the 2008 first boundary waters musky club outing in crystall falls ,mich.
again an excellent demo. but not many in attendance.
ironically it was done by dave wineburner, who was hosting larry in his boat when they hooked this monster on Green Bay.
way to go dave.
your release techniques worked beautifully...............

| Thanks Dannyboy!
Hey I think this is one of the most important aspects. What do we do after the catch and how do we do it. I'm proud that our concern was for the fish and it's health. I know we did everything we could think of at the time to do things right.
Some could always say what about this or that but the fish has to be the main concern!

| Congrats again on the big fish, Awesome! This just proves again the great fishery we have here and the reason we need to keep releasing these fish. There is no telling how big these fish can get. We really have no proof of how big they can really get and just emphasis the fact that a 54" limit is not a bad idea. I've been trying to get the education on proper release for sometime now on Green Bay. As a guide, I'm on the water nearly every day and have witnessed some very bad release efforts. Every weekend I see guys letting fish flop around the boat and then holding them up for several photos. I've witnessed fish being out of the water for over 5 minutes. If you get a chance, next time you are at one of the Green Bay boat launches, check out the musky release info signs posted by the Title Town Chapter of Muskies Inc. For more info on proper release methods check out http://www.captainjollycharters.com/pages/posts/do-you-have-the-too...
This was a great catch and release effort, I commend all the anglers involved in this catch for their sportsmanship! Let's all do our part to continue to educate anglers on the proper handling of muskies not only on the Bay, but everywhere else in the muskie world. |

Location: Green Bay, WI | Wow...GREAT fish. I'd really like to think that this was the fish we caught and released last year, at nearly 54". Of course there's NO WAY to know that--but it was in the same area, which means nothing (for the most part).
But I like Brett's point--we just don't really know the potential of these fish. Last night David Rowe gave a fantastic talk at our MI chapter meeting. I videotaped it, but I'm not sure how it turned out yet. The lighting was poor and there was a lot of background noise, so I am not sure how the audio turned out. But I got it all on HD videotape, and will capture the video into the computer tonight. If possible I will upload it to the site here, and folks can watch it. But I think that we are learning more & more ever year about this population--and we are all starting to gain an appreciation for just how big these fish can get.
Man, I hope the video turned out OK from last night--and if it did I will upload the complete talk, and the Q&A session that followed, this weekend. And for Brett...I was very glad you were there and asked the questions you did. As usual, you were right on target.

| hey tom,
is mr. rowe finally ready to concede that they can and have reached 55"??????
the dempsey fish and now the lorenz/wineburner fish proves that......

look foreward to seeing the video and please let us know when it is up.

Location: Green Bay, WI | I am capturing the video now. The audio is so-so, because they were playing pool and the mic picked that up of course. It also picked up the conversations from the bar area, lol. I am amazed at how sensitive that microphone is. But I will finish the capture and post what I can. The whole thing will need to be rendered to a different format as I recorded it in HD, so that will take a bit of time. So I will post again when it's online.
To answer your other question... I think that our biologists are well aware of the size these fish are starting to achieve. Any doubts that the fish can reach immense size are quickly being erased, I believe. But the issue is the *number* of these fish that will reach immense size. In any population there are the "Shaq's" and also the "Mini-Me's" in terms of size. That's not the issue here--everyone knows there are a few Shaq's out there. But it's the size of the "near-Shaq" fish that seems open to debate; or more accurately, it's the number of these near-Shaq sized fish that we simply don't know yet. Many of the anglers are telling me that 1) the average size of Green Bay muskellunge they are catching has been increasing over the past few years; and 2) the maximum size of fish being caught seems to be increasing year after year...at least over the past several years. So the issue(s) is/are that if there are more big fish than we realize, and the fish have yet to reach their true potential--then what's the best course of action?
We can talk about all of these things until we're blue in the face, but the bottom line is that if the majority of citizens in Wisconsin want the 54" limit to become a reality, then it will probably happen.
Dave gave a great talk and we had a very informative and educational discussion afterwards. I will try my best to get it online ASAP, and at the very least you'll be able to listen to the audio and see some of his slide.
TB
EDIT: The lecture part of the video seems to have turned out better than I had anticipated, for the most part. So it should work out OK, once I get it edited to the proper size for uploading. There will likely be several parts to the video though, as the entire evening went over 90 minutes.

Location: Green Bay, WI | The videos are uploaded in the Video section.
Hopefully they'll be OK for everyone. The lighting was poor, and the background was very noisy--there was a LOT of off-axis noise from the bar area. I went through the footage last night for a few hours and tweaked audio as much as I could though...thank God for automated audio envelopes in non-linear video editors. I used the WMV codec to process the footage, and there are four parts to the talk. The whole thing went for about 90 minutes, including the Q&A session that followed.
But on behalf of the entire Titletown MI chapter, I wanted to take the opportunity to once again say THANK YOU again to David Rowe, our Fisheries Biologist here in Green Bay. He gave an excellent talk, and was very patient to answer everyone's questions. The more I interact with Mr. Rowe, the more certain I am that our fishery is in excellent hands...
