Very cool looking!! Are they hard plastic? Short taps to get them zinging? How's the hang time? I'm looking forward to there full time arrival. Congrats!

Thanks Chas. I had them out today. The big one weighs too much right now but it worked well. The 8" looks great! 3.1 oz and it hangs well but not so much that you have to sit and wait to give it another tug. They are made of high impact ABS polymer and through wire. They are also a one piece lure. The tails are part of the entire lure. I also made the tails thick so they will be durable. These also have slightly oversized hooks with a wide round bend in them so the hook points will extend outside of the lure bodies for better hook ups. I hope to have 20 colors for both sizes by spring and if they go well I will make up to 40 stock colors. The one above I just painted with Krylon paint and some good old Rustoleum over that. LOL its about the best I can do. The production models will look much nicer and will also have a clear coat over the paint. Not sure if I will sell a lot but any lure is fun to make tweak. This one is a long time overdue for me...

when a product isn't available to the buying public, there is nothing wrong with somebody stepping in and filling that void.

Nothing wrong with having variety. Or would you just rather just have ONE company and NO choice as to what to buy???

awsome manta rip off

yes, actually, it looks to be a pretty good one.

there's 5 versions of the Weagle out there, a bunch of different Bulldawgs, and 25 versions of the Double Cowgirl...all of which benefits the consumer who has more choice when it comes to quality and price within a certain kind of lure.

James/Tacklebooty's track record with making "copycat" lures is pretty good: his bucktails (cowgirl), super-d's (bulldawg), and ciscos (shadrap) have all been decent quality lures at exceptionally affordable prices. i've been impressed by his openness and willingness to accept feedback from customers that has resulted in improvements to the lures.
i'm betting that the sea cows (manta) will follow suit, and likely be a decent lure, affordable, and most of all easily available.

Again this one is simple economics. River Run Tackle had production problems (quantities not quality) so the price on Mantas went up as musky guys scooped up the baits. Seeing that they could get $30-$50 for their baits, RR purposely limited production as they announced last year. Remember the email saying they would only do limited runs and available on their web site only? The market reacted with at least a couple of guys making similar baits (Bikini Baits makes a glider with that same tail and action as well) to fill the void that RR created in the market. Supply and demand.

James - what's the story with the grooves in the belly?

If the action is good which I am sure that it will be and I know that the price will be where it should be I will be throwing one atleast this year. I like that james is always on the board answering questions (very quickly) and his product with the super d is currently the superior of the bulldog because he did not ship it off over seas to increase his profit margin at the expense of quality. I have heard nothing but good things bout his products and I am sure his sea cow will be a solid well made bait at an affordable price. Who doesn't want that?

Honestly I don't mind the "awsome manta rip off" comment. 1 out of 100 have that view and its fine with me as long as the other 99 like my lures I tried to buy the Manta brand but could never get a hold of Paul (email, phone, etc.). After hearing from many people who know him (and all said essentially the same things)...Paul is not going to sell the company and he only plans on making very limited numbers of lures from now on so he can spend time with his family... So, I saw a market "gap" and went out about 10 months ago and designed my own glider with all the improvements I saw necessary to increase hooks ups and make the lure my own. As you can also see the entire lure is painted to give it a bigger profile, the hooks are bigger, the grooved in the belly are to also help increase hookups, 3D holographic eyes, through wire design yada yada yada. The tail is about the same shape and function but then the Manta did not invent that tail configuration so I am actually "knocking off" a lure that is about 30 years old and not sold anymore from what I understand (need to buy that vintage fishing lure bible someday!). It has been out for a long time and otherwise these are all gliders and hopefully will catch fish regardless of the brand. As always, vote with your money. I vote with my money everyday as a consumer. At the end of the day I just want to make high quality lures and not over price them. I started my company because I could not afford to buy muskie lures for $25-$40 a pop and found out soon that a lot of other guys could not afford that either. Now with the economy going to crap so fast I think we can all use a little break on our hobbies and a beer or two during the weekends. I can’t imagine being priced out of the things I like to do as hobbies.

His stuff, like the Super D's, are made over seas, in fact in the same factory as the bulldawgs are made.

Actually my SuperDs are not made in the Bulldawg factory anymore. Short story, MI asked that they not make my lures anymore or they would pull their production from them. Worked out well for me as I am now tooled up at a new factory and changed over to using a new BASF plastisol blend and it also gave me the opportunity to make all new re-designed SuperD molds (three sizes, two weights for the regular and two for the MEGA-D and one Mag) and a re-designed full coil harnesses. Those are looking great for 2009. I just beat a MEGA-D to death and I could not destroy it (get the body to fall off). The new all-coil harness really holds the body on and the new thicker tails and slightly harder plastisol are going to keep these lures fishing for some time to come! I will also be making a 5-color pack of replacement tails for all three sizes of lures so you can have an economical way to repair your tailless swimbaits. I see no reason to make a "disposable" lure so you have to come back and buy another lure from me. These lures are rubber but that does not mean they can’t boat you 5-10 fish each! “Disposable” lures is not my "vision" for my company. I want my lures to be as high of quality as I can make them, low prices, and last you a long time. I have some $2 Dare Devils and Johnson Silver Minnows from 30 years ago that I still fish with today. Ya, I don't buy very many spoons now but when I need a spoon I buy Dare Devils and Johnson Silver Minnow.

It really says a lot for your company that you are as concerned with quality as companies were 30 years ago. I know I have seen and used your baits with very few problems. I have owned others, but few have taken the time to call and talk with me on the phone. Great baits for a great price James. Keep up the good work!

looks like a great set of baits james! i for one think what james is doing is what this country is all about (make a good life for you and yours while helping others) and what we as a musky community should be all about(contributing to the beterment of others fishing and taking a little for ourselves ,too). can't wait for those shallow-D's to come out, too!

For the guys who don't like the "copies" how do the new Mag Shads look? I can not find anything close to them on the market. 11" long body and two lip styles (shallow "twitcher" and a deep diver (20')). I really wanted these out for fall 2008 but the lips kept breaking on me so I had to source a different polymer and redesign the lips to make them a lot stronger/durable. These are real nice now! A few members here on M1 really helped me out with these. I am not sure how many they broke for me but they broke a lot (thanks Mike and Ryan)! LOL Plus most of the 21 colors are M1 member suggestions/requests.

I think its great that your making these baits. If the haters want to buy the others, let them. For myself, if I can get a lure that is made with good quality and cheaper than other brands, I'm going for it. With the economy as it is right now, if I can save a few dollars thats a bonus to me. Good work James, the cows look good. Whats with the lines on the bottom?

The grooves are kind of like a boat hull. Just something I wanted to try with the belly. I saw some real old smaller bass/pike lures with them while at Cabelas in the vintage display case they have. They just looked cool and "retro" so I put them into the design to see what they would do for action. Honestly, they don't do much. The Sea Cows/Calfs run as you would think they would and can even spin enough to face the opposite direction with the right twitches. But, I also had the thought that the hooks would not lay into the belly as well with these grooves like they do with other round belly gliders. That is one of the good things about them IMO....I think. You guys will have to be the judge of the hook up ratio since I stink at catching musky! I can no longer admit how many hours it has been but I really need to stop keeping track myself.

TackleBooty I think you will have to T the front hook so the hook POINTS are not riding up in the grooves. COOL BAIT

10" and an 8" right now and if they go well a 6" (Sea Kitten?) later in 2009. I have to slow down honestly. By mid 2009 I will have over 1000 SKUs. Takes a lot of time to make 1000+ UPC codes and a 1700 sq. foot home with two kids is hard to fit 500,000 lure in I used to curse my full time jobs for putting me through all of those project managment classes and learning all of those systems. Not anymore....
