| anyone with any experience with this boat. thinking about one for musky casting and maybe a very rare trolling pass or two. fishing waters 700 to 6000 acres...maybe a trip to eagle or LOTW. fishing mostly 2, occasionally 3. what would be adequate horsepower for my needs with this boat? how is it in rough water? | |

Location: Owatonna,MN | I have owned one for 6 years now and am mostly happy with it. Mine is a 1995 with Merc 100 runs about 42 mph with just me in it.(GPS reading). Rod locker is basically worthless and will hold ok in rough water. Great casting platform. I was hoping to move into a newer boat next spring, but probably won't be able to. Location: Nordeast Minneapolis | I'm partial to a Phantom, but then I grew up fishing in one. When I had the chance to get one myself, I jumped at it, and don't regret it a bit. I'd have to agree that the rod holders aren't worth much... mine can hold a 7' rod, but that's the limit. Mostly we just keep a few spinning rigs in there in case the mood strikes.
For two people fishing, I don't think it gets much better... at least in the price range we were looking at. The platforms are great for casting. You're up high enough to see the lure, figure 8's are easy, and landing fish (when you catch them) is a breeze. The newer layouts don't offer a ton of space for lure storage, but I probably have fewer lures with me at any given trip than a lot of guys- one big box and one smaller one. But ours has waterproof storage for days, a huge livewell for the occasional shorelunch, and plenty of compartments.
For three people, just make sure your best caster is in the middle... but I guess that's probably the case for every boat this size.
It won't handle big water like a 20' deep V, but I've taken one to some really big Canadian water as well as Mille Lacs, and had no problems. Never felt uncomfortable or outmatched. Scott's right, though... it's ok. Not great, and I wouldn't even think about taking it on Lake Michigan or Superior, but it'll handle most water.
Ours has a 110 hp Merc, and it also does about 42. I think HP mostly depends on what you want out of it, and how quickly you want to get to your spot.
For trolling, we put in a couple rails and a couple down east saltys, and it's fantastic.
In short, I love it. Probably not for everyone, but I'm a big fan. | |
