| A friend send me a pic of her brother with his first big fish. It looked to be around 40 inches (plus or minus). The fish was well proportioned. Without revealing how the side of the fish looked, please study the attached pic showing the tail of the fish. Then select the poll option that matches what you feel the fish is. I'll show the pic of the whole fish once one response gets to 25.
For the purposes of this poll, clear, barred, and spotted phase should be considered true muskies.

Look like a big old Channel Catfish!.....
It suppose to be pure musky, pike or hybrid musky.....
My guess is hybrid musky....musky's tail is more point. Pike same as hybrid but more black spots....

What struck me when I saw the attached pic is the rounded tail on what appears to be a clear phased true muskie. I'm no biologist, so maybe this isn't all that rare, but the pointed tail is what I've always heard and read is the distinguishing feature of a true muskie. Could this be clear phased hybrid? Anyone with a fish biology background care to share your knowledge? Thanks for participating in this poll.
(Sorry for the quality of the original tail pic. I blew it up a bit because when it was small it was hard to see.)

| No such thing as a "clear phased tiger." As with anything in nature, there are no hard and fasts and there is a tremendous amount of variation. Sure, one quick easy way of IDing a muskie from a pike or tiger is the pointed tail, but the fact that the tips of the tail don't form tight 45 degree angles doesn't mean it's not a muskie. Look at the tiger thread in the Muskie Research forum and you'll see that all those hybrids have VERY rounded fins, much more round than that in your photo. If you want to get super technical, count the mandibular-pores on the lower jaw (6-9 for muskies, 5-7 for tigers, pike 5 or less).
More often than not, hybrids are GLARINGLY obvious. |
