Can someone tell me or point me in the direction where I can find out what the rules are for using suckers in northern WI. Looking for info from the VHS standpoint. Do we have to dump them and buy new ones for each lake?

Thanks

Dump suckers and buy new ones for each lake is no! Most of us stay with one lake for all day anyway!
But do not throw suckers into lake when you are done!
Large baitshop sell suckers with certificated should be okay! Maybe call Rollie and Helen's Musky Shop for more information and they know a lot about suckers and rules!

If you don't introduce lake water into your bait bucket/livewell you can use your sucker(s) on other lakes. The water you get from the bait shop should be disease free, but once at the lake we don't know and better safe than sorry. We don't even want the slightest risk of spreading VHSv into other waters. And since we don't know where the disease is or could be we must use caution and try at all cost to prevent the spread.

I agree that controlable steps should be taken to prevent the spread of this disease and all other invasive species, but in all honestly, we can only do so much...can we stop or somehow regulate ducks from flying between certain waters?! no.
what about the people that jump lakes in a day...they throw this bucktail, or some other lures that can absorb water...then jump to another lake and throw the same bait... whats next? a hypothetical law that makes you disinfect each lure before launching your boat? i'd like to see how that is regulated...
bad day at work, sorry for being so negative

This topic has been gone over several times in the past and the issue of whether we can stop ducks from lake hopping, water in bucktails, etc. is not the point. The DNR is trying to do everything they to prevent the spread of VHS so they are in effect asking for COOPERATION from the public in helping to avoid what could be a huge problem. Can guys get away with breaking the rules? Sure. I see it all the time. Is this whole VHS/bait thing going to help save our fisheries? I don't know but I'm willing to do my part to help avoid a catastrophe. Frankly if the DNR really wanted to make it tough they "could" eliminate the use of live bait at all. Just think about the screaming that would go on then from all segments of the fishing community.
