Why is our 4-stroke kicker louder than the big motor?

We've got a 9.9 Bigfoot Merc and anything above 3-3.5 mph makes the engine sound like an F-15 taking off. Is it just working harder because of the large load it's trying to push? I saw in another thread that some guys are adding SeaFoam to get it to "purr". It's totally obnoxious and is uncomfortable to troll with, so we usually end up using the big motor when there's really no need to. Thoughts?

I would try SeaFoam and premium gasoline without ethanol..

Smaller motors are generally louder. Its all about balance. Just think about how smooth the idle on a 4-cylinder car is compared to a v-8.

Same motor for me, and the same story/issue/problem. It works fine, but not exactly smooth and quiet!! I wonder if a different prop would run smoother at higher speeds...
