Calling ALL trollers.
I have the rods, the reels, tied up some flourocarbon leaders........all I need now is advice for a novice troller. I'm not getting into boards or anything like that this year, even though I used them for decades on Lake Michigan. I troll for walleyes alot, and even hand-line for them, but trolling for muskies is something new to me. I've done very little, mostly just throwing a lure out behind the boat while I idle from spot to spot.
You can PM me, or give a tutorial here, but nothing is obvious to me at this point. If I want to fish more hours, I'm going to have to troll. I live 90 minutes from Green Bay, and can't hunt any more....what do you think that I should be doing this fall
So give me your best, I have the notebook out.
Thanks,
Beav

Green Bay is some big water. I would pick a small area that you can work completly in one day. I would use your Planerboards as they help get you wide and many times its the outrod that goes. Last year my wife got this nice 51.5 inch Northern Michigan Musky on a 30 foot slider off of a planer board.

Baits are another story and Florocarbon is not nessarry or even best in my book. My best results have come from using good Wood lures designed for trolling. Lokes, NILS Master, Talonz Slashers, Mordas, Woodies, Tuff Shads etc. I run 30 and 50 lb Mono with either 50 lb Big Game leaders or 90 lb coated stainless steel. 30 and 50 or 50 and 90. I use the 50/90 combo on big baits like the Talonz Deepthreats and 15 inch Dragon Claws. 14 inch Jakes ,13 inch Grandmas.

If I were to troll Green Bay I would be looking for a huge fish. I would fish big and trade one monster for 5 days without a bite. I would run deep divers under the boat and a spread of rods and lures out on the 31 inch Planer boards. Nils and Big Slashers on the boards Deepthreats and big Jakes and such under the prop wash. This 51.5 incher came on a 10 inch Nils using a 30 foot slider. The slider has to be hand lined in. My wife is tough ha ha ha . If you look in the background you will see the two stalled Planer boards. You see we came to a complete stop so we could release this fish unharmed . We were fishing some real big water and this fish was the only hookup in 5 days on the water. We were not fishing St. Clair but as you all can see it was a spotted. Kingfisher

Beav,
I've trolled Green Bay (well, the river, anyway) once, so I obviously consider myself to be quite the expert.
I'll send you an email when I have more time w/ some of the basic tips I use out here; some are applicable, others are not; but with all of the info, you can decide what works best for you.

actually...i'd love to see him post it here.
Sorno does as much or more trolling for muskies as anyone around, and that kind of expertise is something we could all benefit from.

I think, for the betterment of all on the board, we should have some articles written about trolling for us to peruse. Small water guys, big water experts......maybe a copulation (if that's the word) of some of the greatest trolling minds at our disposal! Let's use them and pay them the regular fee
I like it!
I'll expect it in audio book form so I can listen to it on my way up to the outing.
Beav

PS- Thanks for all of the PM's guys. Very good information.

"copulation" means coitus...

I think you meant compilation.

I sure hope he meant compilation, or this parts particularly disturbing:

I'll expect it in audio book form so I can listen to it on my way up to the outing.

Yeah, a bunch of muskie trollers copulating on tape so Beaver can learn how to do it better...

Jeez, that's just weird! LOL

P.S. The buzz blades on the booger are the same size incase it is of interest still. Should be getting the 10 inchers wet in a week or two with temps going down into the 30's next week.

It aint rocket science or even dog brain surgery.
Take your boat, throw out a couple lures and drag them around.
Look for where most of the boats think it is good.
It probably is.
Get tired, if clear, go to the 15 foot break and troll at 10.
If dirty go to the 10 foot break and troll at 5.
Drive your boat in an S pattern.
Speed up.
Slow down.
Troll 3 lures, 9 inch grandmas, Ernies, and jointed depth raiders.
Don't tell Shep about the fish you catch.
It will upset him.
