I cast 99% of the time - but I would like to try some late season trolling this year, in your opinion what are the best boards available for muskie?

Yellow Offshore boards with OR-18 clip upgrade, the only way they'll fail ya is if it pops off and one of your buddies let's them out of their sight, then they seem to disappear!!!!!

Thanks Mike - was just looking at those on Thorne Bros websight. Will the OR-16 tension hold a 14" jake?

I've tried the yeller birds, off-shores(with clip mods) and now the Walleye boards from church. The Church boards have been my personal top choice for inline boards for musky fishing that I have used so far, for price-point and ease/effectiveness of use. That said, they might not hold a 14" jake with the regular clip setting(without looping the line), and the big bird would prolly be your best be there, or the OS with clip mod.

An OffShore with the correct clip will hold anything you want to drag behind it! I forget the clip numbers but I use the black ones on the front with the clip that snaps down, there is no way that anything can get out of it - PERIOD! and then I use the red pinch pad designed for snap wieghts on the back. This is the one with the little plastic "tit" on it.

This system will hold up to anything you want to throw at it. I use it for musky, walleye, and salmon. If a 4 year old salmon can't make it come undone nothing will. The down side is that to set up an OS like this is about $50 or $60 EACH! I just got a pair of the Church TX-22's that I might try for musky this year also as I have heard good things about them.

I've been running Off Shore boards as well. The bigger clip reelman is referring to is the OR-18. Definitely get those for pulling big baits. They won't slip at all for you. I run them with snap weights up to 12 oz's and hard pulling flashers and flys for salmon (not to mention a salmon screaming off with them on and pulling them under) as well as big slammer deep divers. They may drag back a bit, but will handle the baits.

I've never run the church boards so I can't comment on them, but haven't seen any bad comments on those either. Personally though, I'd go with the Off Shore boards as so far I've been happy, and they've seen a lot of water over the years.

I run the church boards. For one, they won't pop off your line. Second, you don't have to take them off your line when fighting a fish. I unclip the front and let it slide down to my 3ft leader. Takes one second. I have had muskies gain 10ft on me tring to take other boards off the line. Slack line, head shakes, bye bye fishie.

Todd, if you weren't so slow, that wouldn't happen.

You can set the Off Shore's to do the same thing. Just replace the rear clip with a snap and put a bead in front of your leader to soften any impact on your knot. Then with the OR 18's you just flip the snap up when it gets to the boat, and it will slide down (if that's the approach you wanted to take). I personally like to take the board all the way off so I don't have a huge hunk of plastic shaking around, but I don't know that it is necessary. I also keep the boat in gear until the board is off so I don't run into the slack line problem Todd was speaking of.

Yeah it's an OR-18 not a 16, been a while since I had to replace one. I have run perchbaits, and 10 inch Jakes off of these boards, I would think it would hold a 14. Tuffy1 is the man when it comes to trolling, if he says it'll hold, it'll hold!!!!!

The church boards are by far the best trolling boards around
