| to each his own, Tom.
if you know where to look, suckers are available in MN and perfectly legal. mud puppies work really well too, and are even easier to get ahold of over there.
there's plenty of good fishermen out there who enjoy live bait for muskies; calling them names isn't especially nice.
casting, trolling, live bait...they're all just ways to enjoy being outside and fishing for muskies that will all be released anyway. thankfully there's no one (you, me, no one) who sits as the moral authority on how to enjoy the sport.
because, for those who enjoy it, sucker fishing is FUN, and isn't that the point?
you seem pretty keen on it...

| that's what I thought too - sucker fishin is for people that don't fish for muskes...
Live bait? Where's the challenge in that? Hang a piece of meat over the side and wait? I did that bluegill fishing up until about 30+ years ago when I graduated to casting and using lures. It just ain't right, man.
Then I tried it. Still casting of course, because in WI you can have two lines out. I learned a couple things:
1. When that clicker goes off, man... Makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up
2. Watching a big old muskie follow that sucker around, 10 minutes or more, just looking? Maybe live bait's not so easy.
3. Even when you do get one to eat the sucker it's no guarantee you'll catch that fish.
So I don't know, Tommy. Maybe to you sucker fishing "blows". That's what I used to want to think because I wanted to be all high and mighty mr conservationist protect the muskie with our swords.
But today? Well its funny, but some of the most respected guides and anglers in musky fishing use live bait. And I've seen more muskies hooked badly on artificial lures than I have on live bait. More importantly than that, I don't care if it "blows", it's just plain FUN. It's fishing, its fun, and that's the whole point. Driving hooks through their faces with a lure or driving hooks through their faces with a sucker, we let 'em go either way. Lots of times sucker fishing you just wind up feeding them, which is a whole lot more than they get just eating a chunk of wood.
If I had to choose, I'd cast. Better hookups that way, easier to catch them, and more fun than just sitting there. But if I can hang a sucker over the side of the boat and catch one that way, I'm gonna do it.
What's good about it? Sorno said enough: ZZZZzzzzztt!
What's bad about it? Watching a muskie follow the sucker, knowing its there and not being able to do anything except wait. Setting the hook and coming up empty. Knowing that you set the hook, came up empty, and that fish is now done for the day, full, and you paid for its dinner.

Location: Athens, Ohio | Tom's a good guy, I got to fish with him, he's fun.
As far as using live bait, I've never been much into that, save the wonderful times I'd take the kids out with a cup of worms for panfish. I've seen the videos, it does work, but if I'm not casting for fish I don't feel like I'm workin for them. I'm just not into killin fish any more, either as bait or for sport. m
but: If you fish the wrong bait long and hard enough, it will sooner or later become the right bait

| Not interested in sucker fishing. I'll gladly fish live bait for walleyes and crappie when i want a meal, but after that I prefer to fool them with something that looks like it came out of a kids toybox, that's the fun part for me. I like to work that othewize inanimate hunk of wood or plastic and make the fish react. I don't even care for trolling. I understand that there is a special and different challenge for some in live bait for musky and trolling for musky, it's just not for me. I understand that it's a kind of tradition in the North, and no, I don't think that either is cheating, or lazy. |

| here in Minn you are allowed 1 line
three times over the years Ive come up on guys asleep in the boat with suckers out while I was casting an area,,I guess its understandable usually you have a bunch of clothes on in the fall and since you cant cast a second line you just sit there and probbably get drowsy,,could have been damaging to the fish though.
remember here in Minn this year you cant transport suckers over 12 inches no matter where you buy them |

Here in Wisconsin I use a sucker while im out fishing in the fall while Im casting...Ive had many days where the only muskies caught were on suckers...
I dont see anything wrong with it as long as quick strike rigs are employed and used correctly....Ive never had one hooked deep or had one die that Im aware of on a quick strike rig...It is another very effective tool to catch fish.... |

| Mostly thinking of this lake only....Vermilion....as it seems not a way to go for me.
That is all I was typen.
Now if ya don't have a boat an this is all left for ya....well?
Now guiding I see lots of people an know for a fact high amount of equipment used is sub par at best for most muskie fishers.
Lots type the hype, but don't move an grove.
Buget is a big factor here I know....but .79 cent leaders, nooddle rods, 30 pound fireline, reels that are older than the fish or new junky ones an unmaintained stuff.....all make for a messy time sucker hunter fishen or any fishen really.
Not typen mad...far from it...I find humor in all I read...DO!
Me just think sucker fishen round here is no good.
Just don't seem same as trying to get them to go on fakes an crazy stuff....?
But then what is not cool to me might be your best thing going for where you fish an how you live......so be it.
Still feel only good sucker out of water is a smoked sucker...no Not ground up in a BONG nither!
Been there done that years an years ago when things were $15 three fingers an pounds went for $105 each eh......
Plus that would to me tend to makes ones voice box go south for a bit being so harsh....an fish breath aint cool....lots of people have it....mostly the ones that talk close an to no end.
Don't even post on boards....but saw this an figured might mumble finger some junk.
Not trying to ofened of piss ya off...far from it.
Like to mess around an when serious.....well....I get on fire an let it all fly.
But would say if yer looking into sucker fishen....try to learn from someone in the know.
Proper rigging, tackle to use.
When to set hooks.
Release.
No rolling on shore or in bottom of boat for some stupid photo.....simple #*#* always makes EVERYTING go smoother.
Just ask anyone who has had a colon check up!
Keep on rocken!

And Mikie, you really ought to try sucker fishin some time. Surprisingly enough, people take great care not to kill the sucker, or even injure it badly. In fact, I've had worse injuries sharpening hooks than what we inflict on suckers using them for bait.
Of course none of that matters much, because as soon as a hungry muskie sees that sucker, it chomps down on it with all those teeth, and guts go squishin out all over the place. In fact if you listen closely you can hear them scream "mommy!" right at that last second before they get eaten.
Which, I might add, is actually far less disturbing than what happened to that bacon you ate this morning before it reached your plate...

| i find it comical that guys think it's just soooo easy to get fish to eat suckers...yup, just drop one over the side of the boat and it gets hit...eat em all day long...yup, just so easy...wrong
it's the guys that think it's either easy or not a challenge that clearly haven't done it or really tried it...
there are days you can have 3 suckers down and have zero rips for 12 hours...and other days you can get quite a few hits on suckers...
one of my biggest wi fish came on a sucker fishing solo...i take as much pride in that fish as any fish casting...
to each their own right.
yah, it's just so easy and not challenging to get fish on suckers. ha!

Location: Oconto Falls, WI | Sucker fishing. Use to hate it, and still hate it but I am liking it a bit more on occasion. It is by no means easy in some lakes. Heck on one lake I have drifted a sucker on for probably 10 years now and have yet to have one get eaten. Like anything else there is a bit of an art to it to be successful ALL the time. Some lakes I have to fish it at least 30’ down, and others fishing at 10’ or less is best. In WI you’re allowed 3 lines so it doesn’t hurt to drift one while you cast. If I had a choice of only one line I would be casting no doubt. Some days the suckers have saved the day, others I wonder why I waste my time and money when all the action was on artificials. Most of the time I don’t set suckers for following fish. Not sure where the thought of using suckers and killing fish is coming in. As mentioned already I have had more issues with fish that ate an artificial than those that ate suckers. I think there is a lot that is misunderstood about sucker fishing.
Things I hate about sucker fishing:
- Gets expensive
- A lot of monkeying around with the sucker to do it right.
- If you buy 2 suckers you are bound to need more. If you buy 4 suckers you are bound to get no hits and have to either throw them out or contemplate smoking them to eat for supper! If you buy 2 and have to run to get more you are bound to have no more action the rest of the trip on suckers!
- Hooking them up in frigid temps!
- Terrible hooking percentage for me. Some days I could hook every fish that eats, but most of the time I don’t have very good hooking percentage.
- The feeling after setting hooks and feeling nothing but your hooks ripping out of the sucker! Especially when you have seen a 50”+ fish that had eaten that sucker ;(
- Finding the “good” suckers can be a pain, and often times you are better off not getting suckers if you can’t find the “good” ones.
- Having a lively one (which is good) that is always getting into the motor, weeds, logs, etc… no matter how much weight is added
Things I like about sucker fishing:
- Allows me to keep a bait 30’ or deeper on those deep, clear lakes. If you have never brought a fish up from 30’ deep or deeper that is an experience in itself even with smaller fish
- Zt, zt, zzt, zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzt!
- Hooksets into a solid fish!
- Saves the day on occasion
- A riot if the fish are really chomping them
- One more line in the water covering the water column to develop a pattern
- A good way for those that may not be able to cast all day or for beginners to still have a chance at catching a fish

Location: Waukesha & Land O Lakes, WI | The good is that fish love suckers. We had contact last weekend with 5 fish, 4 of them on Suckers. When water temps get cold enough that fish become lethargic, there's nothing better than putting a meaty entree in their face. Come late fall I'll do nothing but run 3-4 suckers in 25-30 fow and I do ok.
Bads, hooking percentages can be low (I run circles and fluro), it can be pricy if you're fishing by yourself and some people think that because they use suckers up north, it's ok to hang a couple out while casting and using the trolling motor to work around the lake. That's blatant trolling. I'm not talking about atempting to stay on structure, I'm talking about the guys who's floats are kicking up a wake. |

| Tom, have you ever tried sucker fishing? I do it quite a bit in the months of October and November. There are days when the only action is on the sucker. There is NOTHING like hearing the clicker go off and you do not know how big the fish is on the other side. It could be 30 or it could be 50. This was also the way I got my boys their first muskie. One of them likes to cast but the other one loves to sucker fish. So if this is a way for me to get one on one time with them then I am all for it. Regardless, sucker fishing rocks !!!! And as BN said, it takes some skill level to catch a fish on them. Keeping the boat in the right position, like right on the weed edge. We like to tickle the edge and draw the fish out. Also, getting a good hook set with a sucker is a challenge. I would welcome you to come out sometime and try it, you will be surprised how much fun it is. |

Location: NE Wisconsin | Another BAD I see here in WI where up to 3 lines per angler are allowed, is broken lines on the hook set. Most "average" anglers do not have 3 GOOD rods and reels. The best outfit with the newest line is used for casting and the other marginal equipment is used for the sucker rigs. Then, when a fish strikes the sucker rig with the 5 year old 20# test line and the angler sets the quick-set hook like he never did with any artificial.......the line breaks, leaving the live sucker and the 2 sets of hooks still in the fishes mouth. I can see no good coming from this situation. And ladies and gentlemen it happens all too often in the fall in WI. I still contend more muskies are killed in the fall by sucker fishing then by all other types of muskie fishing in WI combined. If done right, with the right equipment, all is good. But too often this is not the case. There are too many things for average fisherman to do wrong!! 1) the sucker is hooked wrong, too deeply hooked 2) you wait too long before the hook set and the fish swallows the hooks 3) use inferior equipment for the violent hook set required, refer back to number 1 4) use small suckers which are swallowed immediately 5)etc If everything is done right there is no problem, but if even one of the above is violated, there can be problems for the muskie. |

Things are well Tommy. Sometimes even better than that.
A trout, huh? I bet they'd work good on a quick strike...
I guess that's part of the novelty of sucker fishing for me - I can't do it here. Utah is a 'no live fish for bait' state, as are many of the western states. I'd like to get a big ol' sturgeon on a gob of worms sometime too. Or a big flathead cat on a bluegill. Maybe ride a moose...LOL Just stuff that seems fun to me.

Location: Bloomington, MN | Not to crack up Mr. Sloan anymore, but I just don't like killing/"hurting" something to catch a fish. I very seldom use minnows, but can get away with the things without eye balls (i.e. leeches & nightcrawlers). The last time I sucker fished I bought 3 (12" class-Minnesota) suckers. I used the rubber band thingey through its nostrils and even dabbed some Anbensol on the bait needle prior to rigging. I ended up using the same one for two days, and did release "Rudolph" ( I probably named them all) as illegal as it is into the lake, and returned the other two to the bait shop (no refund requested). I'm not a member or supporter of P.E.T.A., but I'm guessing that at this point in my life the intentional taking out any of God's critters might mean less points deducted from my board. Fishing with suckers is a great way to put a BIG MUSKIE in the boat/from shore in the late fall. The quick strike rigs are about as "harmless" to a muskie as a Mepps #5 used in June (if done properly). I have absolutely no qualms against anyone fishing with suckers for muskies, because I enjoy looking at the pics of the huge fish they are holding with their frost bite paws. I would give my left gazoonga (even though the right one didn't develop properly) to have the memory of catching/being present during the capture of a BIG Vilas/Onieda County Lake, WI shore caught fish. So what if it was kept/dead due to gut hooking..... "We would of made the scoot to the rod sooner if we heard the clicking that was being drowned out by the clanky sound of beans being stirred over the toasty campfire and Carl yelling that the leak he just took froze instantly!". Those days are hopefully gone, but some may still need a bit of edjamacating. Do what it takes to get your big fish, enjoy every "free" minute you have, and try your best so someone else can possibly have the same thrill with the same fish. Remember that no one really cares where you placed in the "KEPT" category of the V.C.M.M. or the O.C.M.H. (is that still in existence?). Get a replica of something that you think you caught like everyone else is doing....it's the new "Fun for the Whole Family" trend.

If we release them all what difference should it make how they are caught? Every angler see the same sort in a different light. That does not make either one wrong. I fish suckers in the fall behind my little 14 ft boat> I row all day slowly working the bars or weed edges. Thats not being lazy or taking the simple way. My hat is off to those that they say they fish suckers and enjoy it.

I personally don't like using them, but with the advancments in rigs and lines, it is a safe and effective method.
I've never even had a bite on one, but know some old-timers that have really turned it into an art, rowing the deep breaks, pause and go around cribs, etc. Still some groups in N.WI using single hooks from shore, that bugs me.
If I'm rowing in the fall I'd just as soon have a Grandma and Slammer deep diver behind the boat.

i've started offering stores where i see single hook rigs the following deal: i'll buy every single hook rig off their shelves if they promise me to buy quick strike rigs to replace them. i then give some suggestions on what companies carry quick strike rigs for them to get. i've had a few take me up on the offer already, and at an average of $1.50/rig, it hasn't even cost me very much.
my local sporting goods store (DW in Portage) is now selling my home-made quick strike rigs instead of the single hook rigs they had been selling.

| Hmmm, I think both motor trolling and sucker fishing are easy ways to catch musky and any idiot can do it.
You can sit on a pier along a deep dropoff, throw out three suckers and not do a thing except reel it in after it swallows your bait. That's really hard. Of course you can sit on the shore with a bunch of guys hitting the bottle and a fire going and set out several rods that can only be tended by boat and do it the hard way too. Yeah right, that is the tough way.
Better yet, as one mentioned troll several suckers behind the boat on planers and cover like 30 yard swaths as you go across the lake. Better yet, troll suckers illegally in waters where it isn't allowed, and REALLY get a jump on the other guys, then claim confusion if the law nabs you.

that's what I thought too - sucker fishin is for people that don't fish for muskes...
Well said. Kingfisher |

| Love DCG comment. Some how bellying up to your favorite reef or weedbed and slinging a reel straight in do nothing bait is more noble than deftly working a sucker along a deep break or weed edge, yeah sure it is. LOL |

Mr Musky
Obviously Lambeau, he started the thread.
Take it up with him.
And BTW it doesn't take an expert to have an opinion. |

If any of you want to go out with me fishing skies with suckers for a day this fall let me know> I'll show you how much fun it is and how the fish are hooked when caught. Many of you bad mouth it and to be honest some of you never tried it. Just give me another 10 days for my foot to heal and I'll be out often.
