I have been going threw the silver 7000 one after another, five since last fall. The disengage lever spring gets weak and don't lock back when you cast, this has been a problem with all of them. A couple will not let the lever lock back when the handle is in a certin spot new wright out of the box. I have one now that needs returned but its past 30 days to return to where I bought it, if I send it back to ABU will they just fix it only to have it happen again in a couple months. I bought a 7000 Red at Rollie and Hellens is this the same exact reel with a red cover or is it a upgrade. Thanks Jim

The 7000ic3 and 7000i are different. I believe the ic3 would be considered the higher grade reel. The ic3 has one more bearing. I've got an ic3 that got "sick" after using it for 5 days on LOTW. I threw nothing but DCGs for those 5 days. It still works, but it makes an ugly sound. Is the lever spring easily replaced? I haven't taken it apart yet.

The guy at Rollies said the reel fixing shop down the road say the red reel with the bushings holds up better but not as smooth as bearings. If this red reel don't last any longer it will be my last ABU. They seem to be a good reel other then the lever problem. ....Thanks Jim

I burned through one of the 7000iC3 reels within three months and not extremely heavy use. I sent the reel in and apparently it had rusted inside the casing and locked up; this reel was fairly new. I was shocked when Abu wouldn't replace the real, stating that it was might fault due to improper maintenance. It was the last Abu I will ever purchase. Seems like the company is becoming more concerned with broader margins and lower price point reels, than with quality and reliability. The older 7000's still seem to hold up great for those who own them.

Abus are great reels, or at least they were. All my "made in Sweden" models are going strong after years and years of heavy use. A little maintenance goes a long way.

The red has 2 less bearings I believe and no cArbon drag.

Gone through 5 7000's including one red. Just kept getting new ones until the shop had none left....probably cost me 100$ gas going back and forth.

All 7000's replaced with Tekota 500lc until something better comes out for cowgirls.

I am new to muskie fishing this being my first season and I have a difficult time with garcia reels. I bought a cheap 6600 bushing drive and that lasted two or three trips. I bought a older 7000 and it has worked fine, just not the smoothest. I then bought a 7000ic3 and that lasted 1 trip, the lever would not stay locked back, and that lead to some awful noises. Took that back and got a red 7000 so far so good. I am not going to buy anymore garcia's after dealing with their service department. Pflueger has the best but doesn't have a reel designed for hard pulling lures, like a double cowgirl. Anyone have any success with the penn975?
