Going to the LVD area this weekend with my wife for a little R&R and to do a little fishing. My wife is looking for some good perch/walleye/panfish and some musky as well. So any reccomendation for some smaller action lakes to fish with decent fishing for the above species?

Also any place on the net that i could buy lake maps for the area.

Thanks in advance for your help

Don't knw much about the area to give you any lakes. But for infomation got to the www.lake-link.com store and they have a selection of books by Russ Wayre and Ken Jackson - both great guides in the Vilas area. Good luck.

The book he's referring to is part of a series called "Fishing the North Country" you will want the book that covers the Cisco Chain, Land O Lakes, Phelps and Conover. It's pretty readily available around the area or online. Just google up Fishing the North Country and you should find it. Offhand probably the closest smaller lake I can think of that would probably fit your criteria is Pioneer. It's a bit closer to N & S Twin but not far at all from LVD. It's a pretty "family friendly" lake with decent action on the panfish etc. and you still get a shot at some muskies. Frankly LVD itself should provide everything you need for action but the size can be a bit overwhelming if you're not comfortable with bigger water or if it starts blowing hard.

While in that general area, especially with your better half, take some time and go visit Mark and Kris Gostisha at Forest Lake Country Store (forestlakecountrystore.com). If you don't know, Mark is the former Sales Executive for Frabill. He now reports to Kris

It is a neat place for all kinds of things: great coffee bar, fresh breakfast/lunch menu, wine, cold beer/soda, other groceries, live bait, etc. They are located on Hwy B, a few miles west of Land O Lakes, north side of the hwy. There is also live music there from time to time.

Mark also hangs with Pat Sheehan on occasion and may have some maps and local fishing insight.

I second the motion for visiting Mark G, he's a wealth of info and makes a great fishermans lunch. Too bad his cute daughter is now spoken for. m
