I just purchased my new jerkbait(6'9 Avid Heavy action w/ Abu Garcia 6500c4 reel) setup before the season and had 50# Cortland on it but Cortland just doesn't seem to get it done. I want a different line and I also think the #test should be increased. What do you guys think about what I should do?

What do you mean "just doesn't seem to get it done"?
On both of my jerkbait rods I use 50 pound Cortland Spectron and would not even consider anything else.

I used the same set up for Jerks for 3 years (just recently went to a 7'6" Lamiglas XH for the rod though), and did have some problems with the 50# Spectron, but have had the same 80# on for 2 years without any problems. Try the thicker 80#, or maybe go to 100# just to be on the safe side I guess. I like the Spectron in that as it gets older on the reel, it ages well, and casts better and better.

Bill,

For some reason with the Cortland line I've had a lot of break offs and I always check my line looking for crimps and stuff like that. I've even had small 30" fish break me off and that just made me fed up with the line. I don't mind it throwing bucktails and cranks but with jerkbaits it just always seems to give me problems.

Brett,
I have had no problums with the Spectron in 50 pound test. Check your eyelets, this might be what's fraying your line??????
Otherwise try the 80 pound.
Good luck[:)]

Brett-

Try the 80# Tuff Line. Great stuff. I also used the 50# spectron for a few years and switched to this.

And Running Hot will attest to this: TUFF LINE NNNNNNEEEEEEVVVVEEEEEERRRRRRRRR breaks. Except if you are throwing my #2 bait, a Magnum Cisco Dawg, isn't that right R_H? The line didn't break, the lure just wanted its freedom.

OK, I feel like a loner but I rig up with 50# Power Pro. Is there something I'm missing about Power Pro? Was using Cortland but had a few scary mishaps.

I use 80# Tuff line on my jerkbait rod and I don't think its ever broken. Its just been great, also I just started using spiderwire and although its expensive its really nice if you can get it for the right price.
