| nedd help solving a problem. i was driving a 90 4 stroke sukuki, all of a sudden it just shut down. now it won't click into gear and there is no spray from the water pump.. i did run some shallow water early in the day. if it over heats does it shut the engine down and prevent it from shifting in and out of gear. we think the water is the problem. any advice , maybe blowing it out, is that possible.
thanks |

Definitely sounds like something clogging the line, which is not allowing the motor to do anything but idle (one of those protective things which is good to have..) so...diagnosing exactly what and where is the issue. You could try some Back-pressure with air through the outlet, but do it easy.
If that does not do the trick, then it will mean a tear-down (I would assume) of some sort. Most probably, a start would be with the impeller on the lower unit. Depending on the age of the motor, it might need replacement anyway. From there, it is a matter of working up the line to and through the engine.
If your motor has a hose hook-up to the engine to flush it (not the boot that goes over the inlet on the lower unit), you may want to try flushing from there...that might determine if the blockage is in the engine or the lower unit. One never knows until you get into it...
Hope something works out...Good luck
Steve

| I have a 200 Suzuki and there are flashing lights and buzzers when it over heats. I have plugged the intake several times running very shallow water, but I watch the spray very close and shut down to clean the intake screen if the spray even looks like it slowed down.
My book says that my motor will not go over 3000 RPM if it is over heating. It will not shut down completely because it would be very dangerous in strong wind or current. You have to be able to control your boat until you can anchor, or get to a safe area. I think you have something else going on. I would call a dealer to see what they think.

| impeller needs to be replaced. You should replace it every 1-2 years. |

| Impellor will prevent shifting into gear? Strange deal. |
