| I believe bait shops are not allowed to sell suckers over 12 inches in length, as anything over 12 inches is then considered to be a "game fish". You can buy any size sucker you care to use from private hatcheries though. I know a lot of guys in MN used suckers around and above 18 inches last year with no problems. |

Apparently the wording in this year's regs is different than last years, and we may very well be limited to 12" suckers.
Trying to figure this out is a pain, even the CO's don't have a clear idea of what the situation is.
Hopefully we can have some dialogue with the DNR this winter and get this situation straightened out.
Apparently the intent of the laws are not to prohibit fishermen from using suckers over 12", but that is how it's seems to be worded in the reg book.

| The issue with the size of a sucker centers around transporting of live fish.
Live fish cannot be transported (except on the lake they were captured from) in amounts of water sufficient to keep them alive unless they are bait minnows.
The definition of a minnow as it relates to suckers is under 12". Any sucker over 12" is no longer considered a minnow, but it is considered a rough fish (not a game fish) and cannot be transported.
So it doesn't matter where you are buying your suckers from...if they are over 12" long you cannot legally transport them. Pretty hard to use them as bait if you can't even drive them to the lake.
Not saying I agree with it, but that is how it reads in the regs. |

Wholesale bait dealers can transport them legally.
In the past you could have them delivered to your lake place, and keep them in a pen off your dock.
But now I've been told that the new regs actually say you cannot use bait that isn't a minnow, or over 12" long.
DNR people aren't even agreeing on the situation.
Pretty much sucks.

| Somebody call the Minnesota DNR their number is
651-296-6157,, dont ask the operator the question they wont know and only qoute the book, ask to be connected to fisheries this is who has the answer.
regulation books are printed in Febuary maybe they have a more clear cut answer thats easier to define.
This is important to get straight with all the non resident fishermen comming here now sucker fishing is more widely practiced in other states
