I am looking to upgrade my trolling motor from 12-24 volt and I found a factory reconditioned 80 lb. thrust Terrova with a 60in shaft and is auto pilot, they want $826.00 but would only give me $100.00 for my 7 year old 55lb power drive as a trade in. So i am left wondering if this is a good deal or would I be buying trouble and should I just buy new?

Does it include a warranty? If it's directly from the factory I wouldn't worry about problems. It could of had a minor defect and got sent back. I'd go for it if I were you.

Based on a recent experience I think he'd get lots more for it selling it here or another fishing board. THen shop hard for a new one....it's a good time to buy boat/fishing equipment. Just my HO.

Yes it comes with a one year warranty, and I think you may be right but how about my used unit any idea what that may be worth with a new peddle last year and a prop that has rubbed a few rocks but is basically OK

I bought a reconditioned Minn Kota Auto Pilot about 8 years ago. The motor had to go to the warranty center, thankfully it was close by, twice in the first couple months. After that it worked great and I sold it a couple years ago and as far as I know he is still using it without any further problems.

I bought a Maxium 24v 70lb Universal sonar factory reconditioned last spring and haven't had any problems. The 1 year warrenty is up, but I got it for several hundred less than "brand new" and you couldn't tell the difference.

you say they are "ONLY" giving you $100 for yours....well it is OLD and used, they aren't going to give you much for it. Nothing to be surprised there.

I would take the $100 trade, tell them you will take it out the door for $700...which is way less than you would pay for an actual new one.

Used or not, you should be able to get a little more than $100 for it if you sell it outright. BUT...if you trade it, there is less tax to pay as well (in my opinion, not enough to sway me from selling it outright)...just one tiny TINY argument for trading. Savings there of what...$6 - $8 maybe?... Sell it outright and get $150...maybe $200...who knows. Ebay is a wonderful thing for items like that...

A factory reconditioned unit is essentially a new unit, but since it was sold once, or had something defective on it (like the main board), it cannot be listed as new anymore. I would have no qualms buying reconditioned...it has gone through the same inspection process as the brand new ones. If the savings is substantial, Why not?

A comparable motor new goes for around 500.00 and the new ones come with a three year warranty, right now I think I will pick this unit up and sell mine myself hopefully for around 200.00-250.00 but that might be optimistic.

You may be able to simply upgrade your existing unit by replacing the lower unit. I did this successfully on a 55# Maxim (cable steer) bow mount unit with 5 speed control.

Being that you have a power drive, you may have other problems with the voltage on the motor that steers the bow mount. If you have infinite speed control (Maximizer) you will also have to replace the controller. Check with Minn Kota on the parts that would be required to upgrade.
