| How many feet of line do you typically put out when you are trolling the 10 inch jakes or bigger believers? I usually troll about 3.5 mph and was curious on how much line to put out. I just bought a line counter reel, so I can have a better idea of where the lure is at! Thanks |

I've run flat lines off the back of the boat with 20' of line out. The propwash can be a great spot.

Location: Racine, Wi | Like some of the others have pointed out, there are SOOO many variables to take into consideration. What depths are you targeting, types of cover, water temps, etc. You then have to take those variables into account and use that as a starting point. I think too many people actually think you have to get your baits as deep as they'll run when you're trolling. As GMG pointed out, propwash rods get bit quite often, as do flat lines.
I wish it was as easy as saying run 59' of line on 80# power pro at 3.5 mph and you'll get bit (if you do run that, let me know if it works. LOL) many more people would be trolling. I think that's why you don't see as many trollers as casters. Some think it's boring, but when you get into the dirt of trolling, there's a lot going on.
But to your question, definitely pick up Musky Mike's Trolling Secrets to get you started out with a bunch of running depths of a bunch of baits. Then take the current conditions and get dialed in. It won't take long to get a few patterns established and some confidence. |

| At 3.5 with 100# braid with yer rod just above the water
Believer at 50' gets ya 10' down....which translates to 2' of depth for every 10' of line
Jake at the same setting gets ya about 8'
Take an hour or two someday - head for a gradual slopping sand bottom and play with baits, line out and speed, mark what depths they hit bottom or go buy a the book. |

| Joel touches on something pretty significant. To some it might seem boring, just dragging baits around. I would argue that to successfully troll it's more work than simply hopping on the trolling motor and bombing casts. Those books help shorten the learning curve but it still is a confidence game and you just have to force yourself to do it. Anyone who simply thinks its putting a boat in gear and dragging baits around is a dang fool. |

Location: north central wisconsin | Definately pick up the trolling secrets book. I was able to preview the thing when he made a donation(which I'm very thankful for) to Operation Muskie, and it comes highly recomended even if you already have the first one.
