What water temps (or situation) gets you in the mood for burning bucktails in the spring?[;)]

I usually like the water to be around 65-70.
I will also burn bucky's if I'm getting nothing but follows on everything else in the box.......for some reason this seams to trigger strikes from those following fish that won't hit my other offerings.

I like to start using speed on Muskies located in ambush type locations ,ie weeds, wood cover ,piers ,boathouses etc, etc as soon as I think they have more or less recovered from the spawn given the type of individual lake.

Normally when this happens the water temps have moved up into the low sixties,so this would coincide pretty much with the previous answer given.

Below that temperature range Ive had more success with the injured fish profile of a twitched minnow bait etc.

True "burning" is an art all to itself and has little resemblance to the ordinary cast and retreive presentation of most people using bucktails. The time and place to use the technique, the equipment modifications, and the physical requirements of doing it right, all help to make it a very effective presentaion that is totally different from what most consider the "boring" act of casting and retrieving bucktails. I will let the conditions tell me when to reel fast, NOT the water temp. If it is a sunny day with some good wind, late in the day is a great time to fish with a fast moving spinner. In the early spring with the water in the low 50's or high 40's the fish in this situation should be active!

When the muskies are in post-spawn many are wandering looking for food to eat so I feel the fish are most active and this is when you can trigger a strike. The weather does seem to have to be warm out as well, can't give you a H20 temp now but hopefully in a few weeks I'll be able too!

Jason
With the success that Tony and the gang down at The Cave have burning Traps with low water temps in the spring I think anytime is a good time to try it. When I was down there this spring the water temp was high forties and low fifties, but they still relied on their high speed traps as a go to presentation. This is a tactic I will be sure to try this year in our Wisconsin waters. I don't know why burning a bucktail would be any different, you are still looking to trigger a reactive strike. I may look crazy burning a Trap in 55 degree water but if the fish respond I don't care. [;)] []
